John James Cravens was born in 1722 in Sussex Co., Delaware; son of Capt. Robert and Mary (Harrison) Cravens, Sr. He married Margaret Hiett in 1758 in Rockingham Co., VA; Margaret was the widow of William Dyer (1728-1758), and had children Roger (1755) and John Dyer (1757). He died on 24 July 1778 in Rockingham Co., VA,

Eldest son of Robert and Mary (Harrison) Cravens. Married Margaret (Hiatt/Hiett) Dyer, widow of William Dyer, in Rockingham, Rockingham County, Virginia, in 1759. John Cravens settled on his Cook's Creek land, a few miles southwest of his father, near a place called Fisher's Spring, "his plantation being not far from present Dayton, Virginia" (historical: neither Cook's Creek nor Fisher's Spring can be entered in the location field).

John died intestate (without having made a will) in 1778. The Court appointed his widow, Margaret, and brother, Robert, co-executors of John's estate; John's mother, Mary, was appointed administrator of the portion of John's estate resulting from inheritance from his father Robert's estate. Before the estate was settled, Margaret Cravens married Dennis Lanahan (on March 18, 1782).

Also in 1782, Margaret is listed as owning 750 acres of land in Rockingham County (Land Book, Rockingham County, Personal Property List; available at the State Library). In 1785, Dennis Lanahan/Lenahan is listed as the landowner, a consequence of having married John Craven's widow. Mary (Harrison) Cravens died in 1781, and John's brother, Robert, in 1784. Dennis and Margaret thus assumed control of the property and other assets, the heirs at law (four of John and Margaret's seven children) not having reached the age of majority. The three adult children had already received their 1/7th of the children's portion of the estate.

In 1816, the four youngest children, "William, Joseph, James Cravens, [Margaret] Peggy (Cravens), wife of Joseph Snap..." filed suit against Dennis Lanahan over the disposition of money and/or property they believed was due them as their inheritance, possibly including the profits realized from Dennis selling their mother's dower. [NB: The outcome of the case was not recorded; it may have settled, or Dennis may have died [c. 1816-1817] before the case concluded. Apparently, they did reach the trial phase, however, as Harrison notes [Dr.] Joseph Cravens, although not being trained in the law, did most of the cross-examination, and did it well.] A large part of the dispute related to the fluctuating value of currency during the period following the American Revolution, "Lanahan states the paper currency depreciated 45 to 1" (from his deposition). A Margaret Graham, who moved to Harrisonburg in 1790, opined "Lanahan's trouble was that he frequented the billiard table too much."

Margaret died in Harrisonburg in 1826.

Margaret HIATT was born about 1736 in Virginia, British Colonial America, (*note birth yr. estimated from date of her 1st marriage & the birth of her 1st son. Also, 1736 is listed as her birthdate in her IGI Marriage Records). But according to other research, Margaret was born in 1727. Margaret was a daughter of John Hiatt II & his 1st wife, Rachel WILSON Hiatt (1701-1746. John Hiatt II, married as his 2nd wife Margaret, (unsure of her maiden name).

About 1755, in Virginia, Margaret Hiatt married William John Dyer (1732-1758). William Dyer was outside Fort Seybert & killed by the Shawnee Indians led by Chief Kill-Buck. Kercheval in his historic accounts of Virginia History gives several variations of the Fort Seybert Indian Massacre. Just how Margaret Dyer escaped this tragedy with two infant sons is not quite clear. One account states that she secluded herself in huge rocks near the Fort.

"Cravens vs. Lanahan--O.S. 291; N.S. 103--Bill by William, Joseph, James Cravens, Peggy (Cravens) wife of Joseph Snap, children of John Cravens, who died 25 July 1778, intestate [without a will] leaving widow Margaret & 7 children: Mary, Hannah, Robert, William, Joseph, James, & Peggy. Administration was granted to widow & Robert Cravens, brother of John....Robert Cravens...was 14 yrs. old at death of his father [John Cravens] & died 10 Dec 1793, intestate, unmarried & without issue. Dennis [Lanahan] made his Will, giving a legacy to his brother Timothy. Dennis & Margaret were married 20 Mar 1782. William Cravens was born 20 Apr 1764; Joseph 20 May 1769; James 12 Apr 1773; Margaret 26 Aug 1775. Dennis says his nephew came in from Ireland, which caused him to alter his Will... William Cravens was Dennis's apprentice as Mason. James was put into brickmaking at Staunton, but was afterwards taken to Kentucky by a relation & never returned. Administration on the estate of Robert Cravens [John's brother] granted in Rockingham, 27 April 1784, to Hester Cravens, the widow & Benj. Smith 13 Sep 1816.

Note: Henry Cook was German (perhaps "Koch") and signed legal documents in German. Henry Cook began military service on 10 October 1774 Served in the Virginia militia at the Battle of Point Pleasant, under Capt. William Nalle.

Mary Magdalena Hudlow was born in 1768. She married Henry Cook. She died in 1825.

Mary Susanna Snapp was born in 1808 in Rockingham Co., VA. She married William P. Chester on 24 September 1822 in Greene Co., TN. She died in 1875 in Chatsworth, Murray Co., GA.

John Henry Snapp was born on 15 January 1809 in Rockingham Co., VA.¹ He married Maria Kepple daughter of Jacob Kepple and Maria Steinmetz, on 17 September 1828 in Washington Co., TN. John Henry Snapp married Nancy Herring on 8 October 1847 in McDonough Co., IL. He married Rebecca Sanders on 14 March 1870 in Sullivan Co., MO. He died on 4 December 1873 in Mercer Co., MO.

Madison Charles Snapp was born on 11 November 1811 in Rockingham Co., VA. He married Mary E. Falls daughter of Jane, on 23 September 1839 in Washington Co., TN. He died on 28 February 1889 in Bolivar, Polk Co., MO.

He was buried in February 1889 in Payne Cemetery, Polk Co., MO.

Note:

Harrison Galifant Snapp was born in 1813 in Rockingham Co., VA. He married Emily D. Parry on 24 March 1836 in Greene Co., TN. He married Tennessee Sarah Jane Callen about 1856. He died in 1863 in Boonville, Cooper Co., MO, Confederate soldier, killed in action.

He was buried in 1863 in Snapp Cemetery, Forsyth, Taney Co., MO, Find A Grave Memorial# 77422269.

Note: Harrison Galifant Snapp began military service Served in the Confederate Army, donated the land for Snapp Cemetery at Forsyth.

Matilda D. Snapp was born in 1816. She died after July 1830.

Campeachy K. Snapp was born on 11 February 1817 in Greene Co., TN.¹ He married Emeline Nelson on 28 December 1837 in Greene Co., TN. He married Rachel Quee Wilson daughter of William Wilson and Abigail Waddell, about 1848 in Polk Co. (probably), MO.² Campeachy K. Snapp died on 6 September 1891 in Clay Co., MO, Dates per headstone.

He was buried in September 1891 in Missouri City Cemetery, Missouri City, Clay Co., MO, Find A Grave Memorial# 17452056.

Campeachy K. Snapp was also known as "Peachy" Snapp. Occupation: Was a Justice of Peace in Polk County, Mo. He lived on 5 September 1870 in Missouri City, Clay Co., MO.³

Emeline Nelson was born in 1818 in Washington Co., TN. She married Campeachy K. Snapp son of John Snapp and Elizabeth Cook, on 28 December 1837 in Greene Co., TN. Emeline Nelson died in 1847 in Polk Co., MO.

Newton S. Snapp was born on 26 January 1819 in Greene Co., TN. He married Mary Ann Payne daughter of Joseph C. Payne and Anna Johnson, on 18 February 1840 in Washington Co., TN. Newton S. Snapp died on 21 February 1848 in Buffalo, Dallas Co., MO.

Mary Ann Payne was born on 20 January 1820 in Tennessee.¹ She married Newton S. Snapp son of John Snapp and Elizabeth Cook, on 18 February 1840 in Washington Co., TN. Mary Ann Payne married Larkin Bennett before 21 August 1850.¹ She died on 15 June 1884 in Polk Co., MO.

Mary Ann Payne was also known as "Polly Ann" Payne. She lived in 1850 in Dallas Co., MO.¹

Alexander A. Snapp was born on 11 April 1820 in Rockingham Co., VA. He married Lavinia Bird on 10 October 1843 in Greene Co., TN. He died on 1 August 1904 in Warsaw, Benton Co., MO.
