He was born in Strasburg on March 15, 1923, to Fred Brown Sonner and Mamie Maphis Sonner.
He served in the Army Air Corp. during World War II, received a bachelor's degree in economics from the University of Virginia in 1950, and retired from the accounting department at DuPont after 35 years of service.
Sonner was an active member of Broad Street Christian Church.
Surviving are his wife of 58 years, Mary Lybrook Sonner of the home; a daughter, Diane Eberly of Richmond; a son, Richard Franklin Sonner Jr. of Greensboro, N.C.; and one granddaughter.
The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Broad Street Christian Church with Dr. James A. Dickerson and the Rev. Bob Button officiating. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the church from 10 a.m. until time for the service Thursday and other times at the home.
