2 electrocuted by power line near Tipton
TIPTON--A Tipton and a Tecumseh man were electrocuted when a grain auger they were moving struck a 7,200 volt electrical line about 4 p.m. Wednesday. Killed were Larry Jon McVay, 39, of 7554 Tipton Hwy., and Edward Ross Schadewald, 18, of 5619 Centennial Rd., Tecumseh. According to a sheriff's department report, the two were filling silos at McVay's parents' farm, 7794 Tipton Hwy. Schadewald was moving a grain auger with a tractor when the auger struck the power lines near
the driveway. McVay's mother, Maria McVay, told officials that Schadewald yelled when the auger touched the lines and her son ran to the tractor and grabbed Schadewald. Both were knocked off the tractor and thrown to the ground. Mrs. McVay was working in her yard at the time. Members of the Sand Lake fire department rescue squad were the first to arrive at the scene. Their efforts to revive
the two men failed, and they were pronounced dead on arrival at Bixby Hospital. The sheriff's department report said the power lines, located 100 to 150 yards off the roadway, were more than 32 feet high, according to the Consumers Power employees. A tire on the tractor was set on fire by the electrical surge.
