COUNCIL GROVE --- Lloyd Lester "Woody" Burns, 89, Council Grove, died Tuesday, Oct. 22, 2002, at a Herington nursing home.
Mr. Burns farmed his entire life and he had worked for several years for Santa Fe Railway.
He was born June 28, 1913, near Delavan, the son of William Christian and Mary Loduska Ferris Burns. He graduated from high school at Delavan in 1930.
Mr. Burns was a member of Wilsey United Methodist Church, where he had been involved in Senior Olympics and earned gold medals in bowling. He also served on the Delavan and Grandview School Boards, he was a former 4-H leader and he had been a member of the Santa Fe Maintenance Union.
He married Helen Elizabeth Cunningham on May 1, 1935. She died on Sept. 15, 1983. He later married Evelyn Swenson. She died on Jan. 10, 1991.
Survivors include three daughters, M. Elaine Heskett, Mankato, Janice Dike, Titusville, Fla., and Phyllis Burns, Delavan; a son, William Duane Burns, Mulvane; nine grandchildren; and 15 great- grandchildren.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at the Wilsey United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Delavan Cemetery at Delavan. Mr. Burns will lie in state after 9 a.m. today at the Memorial Chapel of the Flint Hills, where visitation will be from 7 to 9 p.m.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Wilsey United Methodist Church and sent in care of the funeral home.

Bernice Barbara Yakle, 89, a life long resident of Delavan, died Sunday, June 20, 2004, at the Lutheran Home in Herington. She was born October 16, 1914, at Delavan, Kansas, the daughter of William Edward Cunningham and Anna Isabel Harkness.
Funeral services will be held 1:00 P.M. Wednesday, June 23, 2004, at the Penwell-Gabel Funeral Home, Herington Chapel, with Rev. Mark Stuckey officiating. Burial will follow at the Delavan Cemetery, Delavan, Kansas. Friends may call Tuesday from 2:00 P.M. until 7:00 P.M. at the Penwell-Gabel Funeral Home, Herington Chapel, and Wednesday from 9:00 A.M. until time of services.
Mrs. Yakle attended Emporia State University and taught school for a few years before she married Alfred Yakle. She was a member of the United Methodist Church of Wilsey, Kansas. Bernice dedicated her life to meeting the needs of others. She was a sewing leader for many local 4-H children. She shared her love of gardening with her husband, Alfred, as members of the Hoe and Hope Garden Club.
She married Alfred Yakle April 22, 1936, at Delavan, Kansas. He preceded her in death in 1993. She is survived by one sister; Eva Wiggans of Delavan, Kansas, several nieces and nephews, and a cousin; Milan Harkness of Delavan, Kansas.
The family requests memorials to Wilsey United Methodist Church or Lutheran Home of Herington, Kansas.
She was buried in June 2004 in Delavan Cemetery, Delavan, Morris Co., KS, Find A Grave Memorial# 34794789.

Eva B. Wiggans, 85, of Delavan, died Thursday, August 19th, 2010, at her home. She was born on December 20, 1924, near Delavan, the youngest of six children; she was the daughter of William E. and Annie I. (Harkness) Cunningham.
A private inurnment service will be held at the Delavan Cemetery, with Pastor Bob Strom officiating. There will be no viewing or visitation as per Mrs. Wiggans' request. The Penwell-Gabel Funeral Home, Herington Chapel, is assisting the family with arrangements.
Mrs. Wiggans was a homemaker and help her husband with their Dairy Farm for many years. She was known for raising Quails, known as the Quail Lady to many. She was a caregiver, and enjoyed her family, especially her grand & great- grandchildren. She graduated from Delavan High School with the class of 1942.
She is survived by two (2) daughters: Charlene Riffel (husband-Kenneth) and Sharon Nelson (husband-Steve), and Roy Wiggans, III, all of the Delavan area; and seven (7) grandchildren; and seven (7) great-grandchildren.
She is preceded in death by three (3) brothers: John Preston "Uncle Red" Cunningham, Thomas "Tom" Cunningham, and Don "Sandy" Cunningham; two (2) sisters: Helen Burns, and Bernice Yakle; and her parents.
The family request memorials to Quail's Unlimited; and they can be sent in care of the Penwell-Gabel Funeral Home & Crematory, Herington Chapel, 404 South Broadway, Herington, Kansas, 67449-3038.
