Note by his friend, Thomas L. Smallridge, Jr.:

Joel was heading home to Indianapolis from riding in the Rolling Thunder Event on Memorial Day in Washington, D.C. and reunion with Brother Marines. Joel loved scenic routes and was traveling on U.S. Route 60 in West Virginia. Just outside the town of Belle, a young man high on drugs ran a stop sign and hit Joel. Joel was transported to Charleston in a coma from which he never recovered. He died 7 days later.

I miss my times with Joel camping, smoking good cigars, talking and sipping gin and tonic made with Joel's favorite, Bombay Saphire gin. Joel was a fine man, a good father, a loving husband, a true friend and Brother Marine. He will always remain in my heart.

He was buried on 7 July 2003 in Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington Co., VA.
