Richard A. Liebendorfer died Saturday, Jan. 28, 2006, at St. John's Medical Center in Tulsa, Okla., from complications following survery for lung cancer.
Dr. Liebendorfer will be deeply missed by his Iowa family and friends. He was an important person in all our lives; a special brother-in-law, uncle and friend. A memorial service will be held at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Okla., on Feb. 3, 2006, at 12 noon. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the University of Iowa College of Medicine, St. John's Medical Center Foundation, the U.S. Naval Academy Foundation, Heifer International, or Neighbor for Neighbor.
Dr. Liebendorfer was born Oct. 15, 1927, in Superior, Wis.
He grew up and graduated from high school in Hampton, Iowa. After high school, Dr. Liebendorfer attended the Naval Academy from 1946 to 1948. In 1952, he married his first wife Jean Hotle, of Columbus Junction, in Iowa City. He went on to graduate from the University of Iowa College of Medicine in 1953. He interned at the United States Navy Hospital in Charleston, S.C.; he served as a Lieutenant in the United States Medical Corps from 1953 to 1956. Dr. Liebendorfer completed his residence in Internal Medicine at the University of Iowa in 1959.
After completing his residency at UI, Dr. Liebendorfer moved with his family to Tulsa, Okla., and joined the staff of St. John's Hospital in 1959. He served as president of the Tulsa County Medical Society in 1982 and as Chief of Staff of St. John's Medical Center from 1989 to 1990. Dr. Liebendorfer was a member of the American Society of Internal Medicine, the American Hospital Association, the American Medical Association, the Tulsa County Medical Society, the Oklahoma State Medical Society and was a Fellow of the American College of Physicians. Dr. Liebendorfer retired from the practice of medicine in October 2003.
He is survived by his second wife, Carole, of Tulsa; one daughter, Kim Brummett and husband Greg and their children Sarah and Rachel, of Herndon, VA; two sons, Kurt Liebendorfer and wife Suzie and their children, Elizabeth and Amanda, of Cypress, Texas, and Craig Liebendorfer and wife Kathy and their son, Robbie, of Dallas, Texas. Extended family includes Joan and Bill Gilpin and family of Iowa City; Tom and Millie Hotle and family of Sioux City; Cousin Bob Liebendorfer and wife Margie; Barbara and Adam Rivera; Carolyn and Joe Benham; John and Karen Henderson; Brian, Stacey and Wade Henderson; Joly and Tom Kettles; Fanny Henderson. Special friends include Mark Frudden, Andi Schlanger, Dick Tenney, Bruce Wenger, David Jenkins, Jon Cox, and Sr. Theresa Gottschalk.
He was preceded in death by his parents and first wife Jean Hotle Liebendorfer in 1981.
