SAMUEL F. HIGENS
Samuel Francis Higens was born January 6, 1859, at Eddyville, Iowa and came with his parents to Warren county when he was but seven years of age, settling at Greenbush, near the present town of Spring Hill, where he has since resided.
He was united in marriage March 8, 1881, to Miss Bertha Orr, who with ten children survive him, one child have preceded him in death. The children are Mrs. Sadie Williams of Neiber, Wyoming; Mrs. Maude Bedwell of Valley Junction, Guy Higens of Des Moines, Frank of Tupper Creek Canada, Mrs. Opal Kepley of Emmetsburg, Harold Higens of Prole, Mrs. Hazel Garrison of Spring Hill, Mrs. Ethel DeVault of Norwalk, and Dean and Ralph at home. There are also 17 grandchildren.
He is also survived by one sister, Mrs. Emma Tilton of Ankeny, and two brothers, John of Greenfield and Thomas of Denver, Colorado.
Mr. Higens had labored under a sore affliction the most of his life, yet as long as health would permit, rendered his service to the world as a carpenter by trade. Having received a fall last September, he has since been failing in health. During which time he has been tenderly cared for by his wife and children, until he answered the call of the death angel Wednesday morning December 5, 1923, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Maude Bedwell at Valley Junction.
He was 64 years, 10 months and 29 days of age.
He has been a kind husband and father, a good neighbor and an upright citizen in the community in which he has spent most of his life.

Mrs. Bertha Higens, 83, of 123 Third St., West Des Moines, died of a stroke Tuesday at the home of a daughter, Mrs. E.M. DeVault, at Mitchellville, Ia. Time of services, to be at Norwalk, Ia., await the arrival of relatives from out of town. Burial will be in Webb cemetery near Norwalk.
Born at Osceola, Ia., Mrs. Higens had made her home with a son, Guy Higens, at the Third street address in West Des Moines the last seven years. She previously lived at Spring Hill, Ia., where she was a member of the Christian church.
Surviving are four other daughters, Mrs. Maude Bedwell and Mrs. Opal Kepley, both of Des Moines; Mrs. Sadie Williams, Worland, Wyo.; Mrs. Hazel Garrison, Wilmington, Cal.; four other sons, Frank, Dawson Creek, Canada; Harold, Denver, Colo..; Dean and Ralph Higens, both of Des Moines; 28 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.

Prole - March 25 – Mr. and Mrs. Harold Higens of Pueblo, Colo., arrived in Prole Thursday. They were called here by the death of Mr. Higens' mother, Mrs. Bertha Higens. Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at the Norwalk Christian church. Interment was in Webb cemetery. Mr. and Mrs. Higens are remaining to visit the Thomas families before returning to Pueblo. Mrs. Higens is the former Miss Alice Thomas.

Kenneth was born in 1946 and Stephen was born in 1951, but died several days after birth. Dorothy lived and worked her entire life in the Mitchellville area. She was a kind and patient woman. She died of lymphoma after several years of illness. Her husband died in April 2000, after which she moved into town. She has six grandsons and many great-grandchildren living in and around the midwest.

Kenneth Edward Overlin, 66, of Olds, died Wednesday, August 1, 2012 at his home after a courageous battle with cancer.
Mr. Overlin was born July 25, 1946 in Des Moines, the son of E.P. and Dorothy DeVault Overlin, and raised on a farm south of Mitchellville. He graduated from Mitchellville High School in 1964. On May 2, 1992, he married Donna Hunter Johnson in Des Moines. They lived in Des Moines and Mitchellville, and retired in Olds. He served in the United States Army from 1965 to 1967, with a tour of duty in Vietnam, and served in the Army Reserves from 1967 to 1971.
He retired in 2006 after working 40 years as a mail carrier for the United States Post Office in Des Moines. Following his retirement, he and his wife spent the summers working in their yard, gardening, canning, and a new venture, raising goats. They spent the winter months at their condo in Sun City, Arizona. He enjoyed country music, especially the Statler Brothers, and gospel music, especially the Bill Gaither Vocal Band. He enjoyed traveling with his wife and pet Chihuahua, Gaby. He liked to work Soduku puzzles and read westerns, but his true loves were farming and tractors.
Mr. Overlin is survived by his wife; his sons, Tim (Jas) Overlin of Des Moines, Jon (Tizzy) Overlin of Altoona, Bob (Helen) Overlin of Mitchellville, David Overlin of Madison, WI, and Brian Overlin of Des Moines; step-daughters, Kristina Johnson of Des Moines, and Kelly (Dwight) Hultquist of Swedesburg; grandchildren, TJ, Whitney, Autumn, Camryn, Raven, Icesis, Cy, True, and Bellami Overlin; and step-grandchildren, Katelyn and McKenna White; and several aunts and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, a stillborn brother, a son who died in infancy, and a stillborn daughter.
The funeral service for Mr. Overlin will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, August 4, at Elliott Chapel, New London. Pastor Elaine Vass will officiate with interment in Burge Cemetery, New London. Military Rites will be presented by the Henry County Honor Guard. Visitation will begin after 9 a.m. on Saturday at the Chapel with the family greeting friends one hour prior to the service.
Memorials have been established for the Olds United Church of Christ and HCI Care Services.
