Carolyn Reading Hammer received her undergraduate degree from Transylvania University in Lexington and her graduate degree in librarianship from Columbia University. She worked in the Cataloging Department at the Library of Congress and afterwards as Curator of Rare Books at the University of Kentucky. She was interested in printing and typography, founding the Bur Press in the 1940s with a circle of book artist friends.

Victor and Carolyn Hammer were married in 1955. She played a full role in the work of the Stamperia del Santuccio and the Anvil Press, and founded the King Library Press at the University of Kentucky in 1956. Her friendships were worldwide, including Thomas Merton, John Dreyfus, Berthold Wolpe, Stanley Morison, Martino Mardersteig, R. H. Middleton, Paul Standard, Ulrich Middeldorf, and Edgar Kaufmann, Jr.



She was buried in July 2001 in Pisgah Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Pisgah, Woodford Co., KY, Findagrave #78758539.

June E. Heeter, 97, of Battle Creek, died Saturday, May 12, 2007, at the Calhoun County Medical Care Facility.

She was born in Lawton and graduated from Lawton High School in 1927 and Western Michigan with a teaching certificate in 1929. In Goshen, Ind., she married Eugene Heeter, Holland High School director of instrumental music and founder of the Tulip Time band review.

She was preceded in death her husband, Eugene, in 1986.

She is survived by sons, Steven and Gail Heeter of Battle Creek, Douglas and Patricia Heeter of Big Rapids, Mark and Susan Heeter of Dublin, Ohio; eight grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Cremation has taken place.

Burial will be Oak Grove Cemetery, Lawton.

Arrangements are by the Richard A. Henry Funeral Home, 703 Capital Ave., SW, Battle Creek.
