Newspaper article -- (Findagrave.com):

The Weekly Pantagraph, June 29, 1883.

THE WOMELDORFF HOMICIDE

The Morris Brothers, Who Killed Daniel Womeldorff, Exonerated and Set at Liberty.

— Jeff and Warren Morris were taken from the county jail at Pekin Wednesday morning and brought before ’Squire Rhoads, where a preliminary examination was held. There were many witnesses from Tremont and vicinity, among them the mother and wife of Dan Womeldorff, the butchered victim of his own folly, who Jeff Morris so terribly carved and hacked in thirteen distinct places.

Only eight witnesses were examined during the morning and afternoon sessions of the examination, and from the facts that were brought out, it was evident that Womeldorff, in his crazed condition from the effects of drink, had determined to kill Jeff Morris, and made his wife accompany him in his wagon to witness him do the shooting of Jeff Morris, her own brother.

The affair turned out exactly opposite, as he was the victim. The evidence from those examined showed that Dan Womeldorff was the aggressor and that the Morris brothers, in taking their part, were the means of Womeldorff’s death, and they were discharged from the custody of Sheriff Kinsey.

There is an undercurrent manifested, and the two brothers should be careful how they conduct themselves in the future about Tremont and vicinity, as more trouble will be the result. They left for their home, three miles south of Tremont, soon after they were released by the officers.

He was buried in June 1883 in Mount Hope Cemetery, Tremont Twp., Tazewell Co., IL, Findagrave #192327176.
