NEW YORK — Grayson L. Kirk, who helped create the United Nations and as president of Columbia University called in police to quell a massive week-long Vietnam protest in 1968 that had shut down the campus, died Friday. He was 94.
Mr. Kirk began teaching political science in 1940 and became acting head of the university in 1951, when his predecessor, Dwight D. Eisenhower, went on leave to serve as commander of NATO.
Mr. Kirk was named president of the university two years later.
In 1968, after Mr. Kirk publicly urged the U.S. government to “get out of Vietnam,” about 1,000 people, mostly students, barricaded themselves inside five campus buildings for a week, including his office. The protest closed the college and drew international attention to their opposition to racism, the Vietnam war, and the status quo in general.
Mr. Kirk called in the police and they cleared the buildings and made nearly 700 arrests, about 75
percent of them Columbia students or teachers,
Protests continued, and Mr, Kirk retired in an effort to calm tensions on campus, said Columbia
spokesman Fred Knubel.
Mr. Kirk helped create the United Nations and, during World War II, advised the State Department on international politics. For a time during his tenure as university president, Mr, Kirk also headed the Council on Foreign Relations.
In 1945, Mr, Kirk served as an executive officer at the Third Commission (Security Council) in San
Francisco, when the United Nations was created,
Mr. Kirk, a native of Jefferson, Ohio (sic), earned his doctorate at University of Wisconsin after studying at the Ecole Libre Sciences Politiques in Paris.
Mr. Kirk is survived by his son, John Grayson, four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. His wife, Marion Sands Kirk, died last year.

Marion Sands Kirk, a supporter of the arts in New York, died on May 17 at the Auburn Manor nursing home in Washington Court House, Ohio, where she had lived for the last decade. She was 92.
From 1953 to 1968, Mrs. Kirk, the wife of a former Columbia University president, Dr. Grayson L. Kirk, organized a number of exhibitions on the campus and at New York galleries to benefit art scholarships.
For more than 30 years, she was a trustee of the Home for Old Men and Aged Couples in Manhattan and its successor corporations, Amsterdam House and the Isaac Tuttle Fund. She was also a member of the council of the New York Botanical Garden.
She was born in Hillsboro, Ohio, studied art in Philadelphia and attended the University of Wisconsin.
Besides her husband of 70 years, who lives in Bronxville, N.Y., Mrs. Kirk is survived by their son, John G., also of Bronxville, four granddaughters and two great-grandchildren.
