Obituary -- (Findagrave.com):

Daily Gazette-Times

Corvallis, Oregon

Friday, August 15, 1919

Pioneer Aged 87 Called Onward

Another of the old Oregon pioneers is lost to the state in the death yesterday afternoon of John January. Mr. January passed away at the home just west of Corvallis, following a short illness from general debility and complications. The funeral will be held from Bovee's parlors at 2:30 o'clock Saturday afternoon, with Rev. J. P. Clyde, of the Congregational church officiating, and burial will be in Crystal Lake cemetery.

Born in Jerseyville, Jersey county, Illinois, October 29, 1832, Mr. January had just attained his majority when he started by ox team across the plains to Oregon, leaving Illinois the 28th of March, 1863 [1853?]. The family arrived in Oregon September 10, after an eventful journey, and settled at Grand Prairie, near Eugene. In October of 1855, Mr. January fought in the Indian war at Cow Creek, serving with his company until February 6, 1856, and in August of the same year he was honorably discharged. In 1862 he was married to Miss Elizabeth Blachley and the couple moved to Cottage Grove, came to Harlan, Lincoln county, in 1878, and resided there until 1917 when they came to Corvallis, locating west of the city. Eleven children were born of this union, eight of whom survive. They are W. W. January, Harlan; W. A. of Olympia, Washington; Mrs. P. A. Yates and Mrs. S. E. Armstrong, of Eugene; Mrs. Maud Hathaway of Santiago, California; Mrs. W. T. Simmons, of Junction City, and Mrs. Fred R. Cooper and George B. January, of Corvallis. The widow also survives.

(Not: Death cert states that Jonathan died on the 15th, not the 14th as stated in the newspaper obituary.)

He was buried in August 1919 in Crystal Lake Cemetery, Corvallis, Benton Co., OR, Findagrave #19029764.
