Biography

Irene Scott was born on 26 November 1896 in Kentucky per 1900 census, death record shows 1895.1,2 She married Joseph Crouch Johnson, son of William H. Johnson and Elizabeth Catherine Keefhaver, before 5 June 1917. Irene Scott died on 27 September 1983 in San Diego Co., CA, -- married name at time of death was Duncan.



Note:

Irene had only one sibling, sister Frances Marie Scott, who married Rev. Ernest B. Motley. Frances and Ernest apparently had two children, a daughter Frances Lucille "Lucy" (1921-2000) who married Robert Campbell and lived at Garner, Iowa, and a son whose identity is unknown, mentioned as preceding Lucy in death in Lucy's 2000 obituary. In 1930, Lucy was living with her father in Kentucky, and her mother was institutionalized in a mental hospital at Jacksonville, where she was again listed in 1940.

Irene and Frances' mother, Belle S. (Hulett) Scott, died in 1938 and an obituary was printed in The Jacksonville Daily Journal on 5 FEB 1938, page 8 (Newspapers.com). In the obituary, it states that Belle was survived by "her daughters, Mrs. Ralph Moore Goltra of Los Angeles, Calif.; Mrs. Marie Motley of Jacksonville and three grandchildren ...".

Because only two grandchildren can be accounted for as children of Frances Marie, I conclude that one of Irene's daughters must have survived to at least 1938, although no sign of them after the 1920 census has been found. DLB 2019.
