Obituary -- (Findagrave.com):
Margaret “Margee” McGraw, long time local resident and former English teacher at Fort Morgan High School, died peacefully in her sleep with family members at her side, on May 22, 2016.
Margee was born to John and Hildred Higgins in Atikinson, Nebraska on May 13, 1927. She was the second of four children. She resided on a ranch near Inez, Nebraska and attended elementary school at a one-room school house, and then at Saint Mary’s Catholic Boarding School in O’Neill, Nebraska. Margee graduated from high school, class salutatorian, at 15-years-old.
At age 16, Margee began college at Wayne State University in 1943. She transferred to the University of Nebraska where her completion was delayed due to her eloping with Mac McGraw. The two were married in Marysville, Kansas in on March 11, 1946.
Margee and Mac lived in Albion, Nebraska. Their first son was born in Omaha. Their next two sons, were born in Lincoln after Mac and Margee moved to Crete, Nebraska.
In 1952, the McGraw family moved to Fort Morgan. The family expanded with the births of sons and daughter.
Margee finished her bachelor’s degree in 1963 from then-Colorado State College (now the University of Northern Colorado) while raising six children. She began her teaching career in 1963. Margee earned her Masters of Arts in Education Degree in 1968. She served as English department chair for several years, and retired from teaching in 1984. Margee continued to complete courses at a variety of colleges and universities in an assortment of topics ranging from writing to French. Margee enjoyed putting her writing shills to use when asked by the Spencers to serve as a part- time proofreader on several occasions for the Fort Morgan Times.
One of her greatest sources of pride was teaching English to hundreds of high school students at Fort Morgan High. Margee developed lasting friendships with many community residents and faculty members of the high school. She and fellow faculty members enjoyed many outings and events.
Margee loved to travel. She and Mac ventured to Europe to celebrate their 25th wedding anniversary. They had numerous other adventures including an Alaskan cruise. Margee traveled to Europe on several occasions, Egypt, China, Russia, Mexico, Turkey, and Chile, as well as many locations in the United States.
After retirement, Margee made numerous trips to visit children and family in Arizona, California, Nebraska, Washington, Wyoming and Colorado. Margee’s grandchildren delighted in visiting “Grandma McGraw” in Fort Morgan. They loved her house, playing at Fulton Heights and Riverside Parks, driving the golf cart, trips to Dairy Queen, and what they considered a local delicacy, hot beef sandwiches, at local restaurants. Margee loved to keep abreast of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and thoroughly enjoyed their visits.
Margee was a member of Saint Helena’s Catholic Church, and served on a number of community boards and projects. She delighted in working on projects associated with the Library-Museum and with historical significance. She had a fondness for poetry, Irish music, and was passionate about literature, especially the works of Shakespeare and Dickens, and other English and Irish literature. Margee was an avid reader and had an extensive library of books.
Mac suffered a long-term illness, and died in 1992. Margee also was preceded in death by her sons John Patrick and Hugh Thomas, by her brother James Higgins, and by her dear friend Dr. Richard Simmons. She is survived by two sisters and by four sons, a daughter, and their families. She also leaves 12 grandchildren, and 16 great-grandchildren.
Her family mourns Margee’s passing, but take delight in their memories. While she will be grievously missed, she remains loved beyond what words can describe and will live on in our hearts, minds, and souls.
Mass of Christian Burial will be Friday, May 27, 2016 at 10:00 am at Saint Helena’s Catholic Church in Fort Morgan. Interment will follow in Memory Gardens.
Friends who wish may make memorial gifts to the Fort Morgan Library/ Museum.
