George C. Purnell

Funeral services for George C. Purnell, 67, of 9520 Eighth Ave. N. E., will be held at 3 o’clock tomorrow in Forkner’s chapel with burial in Washelli. He died Tuesday in a hospital after a short illness.

Mr. Purnell, an interior decorator, came to Seattle 15 years ago from his birthplace, David City, Nebraska. He was past master of Atkinson Lodge No. 164, F. and A. M., Atkinson, Neb. He was a member of the Building Service Employees Union.

Surviving are his wife, Verna; three daughters, Mrs. B. W. Mueller and Mrs. Ralph I Davis, both of Seattle, and Mrs. F. W. Withers, Omaha, Neb.; a son, Clifford R. Purnell, Tacoma; two sisters, Mrs. Russell Emory and Mrs. Harvey Knickerbocker, both of Colville, Stevens County; a brother, Jesse A. Purnell, Omaha; 12 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Milton Dean Funk, age 89, of Atkinson, Nebraska, passed away on July 17, 2016 in Atkinson. He was born on September 14, 1926 in Atkinson, the son of George Connie Funk and Mabel (Bokhof) Funk.

Milton graduated from Atkinson High School before enlisting in the United States Navy at age 17. He served in the Pacific during WWII from 1944-1946. After completing his tour of duty, he graduated from the University of Nebraska, and enlisted in the Naval Reserve. He taught Veterans Agricultural School in Atkinson for many years.

On February 2, 1949, Dean was united in marriage to Theo Jeanine Withers. They raised four children on the family farm/ranch north of Atkinson.

Dean enjoyed his family and friends, hunting, fishing, photography, gardening and Nebraska football. He especially enjoyed watching and identifying varieties of birds and had a special love for Labrador Retrievers. He took pleasure in canning, baking bread, and making delicious angel food cake, lemon meringue pie, and prime rib roast.

Dean was a proud member of the American Legion Post #86 for 71 years. He was a Holt County Supervisor for 14 years, was a board member for the Northeast Nebraska Area Agency on Aging, and served on a committee at the Atkinson United Methodist Church. Dean was also a member of the Artificial Cattle Breeders Association.

Dean was preceded in death by: parents; brother Raymer Funk; and sisters Beulah (Funk) Atkins, and Bethene (Funk) Morris.

He is survived by: his wife of 67 years Jeanine; son Warren (Carol) Funk; daughters, Karen (Ken) Fundus,, Michele (Joe) Kopecky, and Pam Kopecky; 12 grandchildren; and 23 great grandchildren.

Funeral service on Saturday, July 30, 2016, at United Methodist Church, Atkinson Nebraska.

Graveside Services ~ Private family burial at Woodlawn Cemetery in Atkinson. Military Graveside Rights by Atkinson American Legion and U.S. Navy Honors Guard.
