John Roberts
HARRISBURG - A memorial service will be held Jan. 16 for John L. Roberts of Harrisburg, who died Jan. 9 of heart failure. He was 85.
Roberts was born in Spokane on Nov. 29, 1912, to John and Minnie Ney Roberts. He graduated from Walla Walla College in 1933, majoring in history and minoring in journalism.
He married Celia Ann Butterfield in 1937. She died in 1965. In 1971, he married Pauline Kallenbach, who died in 1995.
Roberts lived in Yakima, Wash., and Brownsville before moving to Harrisburg 12 years ago. He owned newspapers in the Yakima Valley as well as the Brownsville Times for many years.
He was an accomplished violinist and photographer, and he enjoyed classical music. He was a member of the Junction City Seventh-day Adventist Church and of the National Editorial Association.
He is survived by a son, John "Jack" Roberts of Richland, Wash.; a stepson, David Kallenbach of Portland; a stepdaughter, Sylvia McChesney of Escondido, Calif.; a sister, Margaret Sturdevant of Beaverton; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. A daughter, Marjorie Ann Roberts, died in 1970.
Friday's service is at 7 p.m. at the Junction City Seventh-day Adventist Church. Private burial will be at Brownsville Pioneer Cemetery. Workman & Steckly Funeral Chapel in Sweet Home is in charge of arrangements.
He was buried in January 1998 in Brownsville Pioneer Cemetery, Brownsville, Linn Co., OR, Findagrave #60580736.

STURDEVANT — Robert Malcolm Sturdevant was born in Oklahoma City, Okla., July 23, 1917, and died in Spokane, Wash., Dec. 19, 1951. In 1936, he came to the Northwest to attend Walla Walla College, and was graduated in 1942.
In August of 1942, he was married to Margaret Roberts, and their home was set up in the boys' dormitory at Yakima Valley Academy, Granger, Wash. The following year they moved to Oregon where both he and his wife assisted in evangelistic work. Following the effort at Grants Pass, they engaged in similar work at Falls City, Ore. and Eugene, Ore., till in 1946, Brother Sturdevant was called to connect with the Columbia Academy at Battleground, Wash., where he served as dean of boys for the next three years. In 1949, he was elected principal of Portland Union Academy in Portland, Ore., where he served for two years. In August of the present year, he was called to unite with the staff of the Upper Columbia Academy as science and mathematics instructor, in which capacity he was serving at the time of his sudden death.
Brother Sturdevant is survived by his wife Margaret, three children, Larry, Jimmy and Ann, and three brothers, Edwin Sturdevant of Casper, Wyo., Dr. Kenneth Sturdevant of Puyallup, Wash., and Gordon Sturdevant of Ardmore, Okla. Services were conducted by Elder W. C. Loveless and Elder Ray Alderson. Interment was made in the beautiful Fairmount Cemetery in Spokane.
He was buried in December 1951 in Fairmount Memorial Park, Spokane, Spokane Co., WA, Findagrave #103301058.
