He enjoyed fly fishing, and learned how to tie flies. A love of music lead him to play the violin and also to become a vocalist on the Christian radio station. One time Ed and another Niles resident sang on the Amos and Andy radio program. An affectionate man by nature, Ed loved to "kiss in the kitchen." In December 1940, in Muskegon, he married the former Mary Alyce Leffering, who preceded him in death. Edward later married on September 11, 1982, in Niles, the former Hertha (Koehn) Sigwold, who survives.
