HARRY BOWEN GAYLEY, of BRICK, died Tuesday, June 14, his 80th birthday, at Ocean Medical Center, Brick. Harry served in the U.S. Navy during World War II after completing V12 Officer training program at Princeton, the University of Pennsylvania and Notre Dame, receiving his commission on March 8, 1945. He served as an ensign on the USS Odum in the Pacific Theater and remained in the Naval Reserves for several years after the end of the war. When the University of Pennsylvania established the School of Metallurgical Engineering in 1946, Harry was one of the first four enrollees. He graduated from this program in 1949. He retired from Delaval Turbine Division, Trenton, which later became Imo-Delaval, after 20 years. While there, he was manager, materials engineering, Turbine Division. He specialized in probelm diagnosis and repair of industrial turbines. After retiring in 1987, Mr. Gayley and four other engineers formed RMX Inc. (Rotating Machinery Experts), a successful engineering consultation firm. Born June 14, 1925 in Swissvale, Pa., he lived in Shark River Hills from 1986 until moving to Brick in 2003.

Surviving are his wife of 58 years, Claire Minter Gayley; three sons and daughters-in-law; a brother; a sister; a granddaughter; and many nieces and nephews.

A private memorial service will be held by the family. In lieu of flowers, requests that donations be sent to the Marine Mammal Stranding Center, P.O. Box 773, 3625 Brigantine Blvd., Brigantine, NJ 08203. Colonial Funeral Home, Brick, is in charge of arrangements.



Harry Bowen Gayley began military service

WW II service, U.S. Navy, commissioned Ensign on 8 MAR 1945, served on U.S.S. Odum, Pacific Theater.

He lived on 1 May 1950 in Scotch Plains, Union Co., NJ.
