Pioneer female journalist Lunzer dies
SEATTLE (AP) -- Jean Hudson Lunzer, a reporter and editor who pioneered women's rights at newspapers, has died of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, commonly known as Lou Gehrig's disease. She was 75.
Lunzer was a Seattle native who began her newspaper career at the Tacoma Times in 1940, where she was women's editor, drama and music editor and general assignment reporter. She later was women's editor at the San Mateo Times in California before coming to the Seattle Post-Intelligencer in 1948.
Lunzer spent 37 years at the P-I. She started as a woman's department reporter, then began to specialize in home furnishings and design. She edited the paper's Weekender magazine for several years and was the P-I's travel writer for 14 years before her retirement in 1985.
A member and past president of the Pacific Northwest Newspaper Guild, Lunzer was instrumental in getting women reporters equal pay with men.
Survivors include a niece, Marilyn Brashen of Bellevue, and nephews Bill Knight, PO-I sports editor, Seattle; Bob Knight, Kirkland; and Bill Renfroe, Colorado.
