GUNSHOTS FATAL
Monahans Man Slain On Street
Standard-Times News Service
MONAHANS—A used car dealer said here Sunday he shot and killed a man because his own life had been threatened.
Alton Lairmer, 38, who lost both his hands in an oil field accident in 1954, was shot down while his auto was being serviced at a gas station shortly before noon Sunday.
Brooks Estes, 45, Monahans used car dealer, was arrested and charged with assault with intent to murder.
Lairmer, shot three times, died at 7:50 p.m. Sunday in Midland Memorial Hospital following a two-stage four-hour operation.
He had been wounded once in the base of his throat and twice in the head. He never regained consciousness after being shot
“He had threatened me,” Estes told the Standard-Times in an interview Sunday night. “He said, ‘I’ll take care of you.’”
Estes was charged in Peace Justice W. A. Gotcher’s felony docket and later posted $3,500 bond. The attempted murder charge had not been changed Sunday night.
“It’s been brewing for a long time,” Estes said of his trouble with Lairmer. “I have tried to ward him off for quite awhile.”
When asked what Lairmer had against him, Estes said:
“I doubt if he even knows himself.”
Rumors in Monahans were that Lairmer and Estes had had a difference of opinion concerning policies. Estes is the nephew of Ward County Judge Carl D. (Toon) Estes.
Estes said “I don’t know how much that had to do with it.”
The used car dealer said he had given a statement concerning the shooting to ward County Dist. Atty. R. B. McGowen Jr.
The shooting occurred at a Texaco Service Station at 416 E. Sealy St. in Monahans.
Witnesses said Lairmer was having his automobile serviced when Estes drove up to a gas pump.
Lairmer walked to the pump near the rear of Estes’ auto.
In a statement, Estes quoted Lairmer as saying, “Get out.”
Witnesses said Estes got out, approached Lairmer and fired one shot which knocked Lairmer to the ground, then fired several more shots at the victim while he was lying on the ground.
Sheriff’s officers said four bullets had been fired from the .22-caliber revolver and apparently two others misfired.
Ward County Sheriff W. B. (Blackie) McNerlin said Estes had hooks as replacements for his hands and used them to drive his auto.
Lairmer underwent two hours of emergency treatment at Ward County Memorial Hospital in Monahans, then was transferred by ambulance to Midland Memorial Hospital. The body was taken to Newnie W. Ellis Funeral Home in Midland.
One of Lairmer’s arms ended at the elbow and the other had been severed near the shoulder. He reportedly lost both arms in an oil field accident in 1954.
Lairmer had spent seven years in the Navy.
Survivors include his wife.

MRS. H.A. SLACK SUCCUMBS AFTER YEAR'S ILLNESS
After a year's illness during which she had undergone two operations, Mrs. Harry A. Slack passed away at a hospital in Portland last Sunday morning.
Funeral services were held at two o'clock Tuesday afternoon in St. James Episcopal church, of which she had been a lifelong member, conducted by Bishop b.b. Dagwell, of Portland. The church was full to overflowing with the sorrowing friends who paid this final tribute to one they respected and loved. Interment was in the Masonic cemetery.
Helen Sherwood was born in Coquille, January 10, 1904, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. A.J. Sherwood and was six months past 36 years of age at the time of her passing.
Following her graduation from the Coquille High School, she attended the University of Oregon from which she graduated in 1925. She was a member of the Delta Delta Delta sorority.
She married Harry A. Slack on Aug. 21, 1926, and for three years thereafter they resided in Texas.
Following the death of her father in August, 1929, Mr. Slack took over Mr. Sherwood's law practice and they have resided in Coquille since that time.
Besides her husband, Mrs. Slack is survived by two children, Harry A., Jr., 11, and Judith, 9; her mother and three sisters, Mrs. Emma Liljeqvist and Mrs. Gretchen Cake of Portland, and Mrs. Delia Bonney, of Coquille. Another sister, Mrs. Claire Jennings, passed away three years ago.
The sympathy of the entire community goes out in this hour of bereavement to the members of the family of this admirable character who seemed to have everything to live for — a happy home, two children who are at the age when a mother's care is most needed, a recently built home on First street, and the love and confidence of all who knew her.

Judith Slack Wright
March 16, 1931 – Nov. 18, 2005
A graveside gathering for Judith Slack Wright, 74, of Alpine, Calif., will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 3, at the family plot in the Masonic Cemetery at Coquille.
Judy was born March 16, 1931, in Myrtle Point, to Harry A. Slack Sr. and Helen Sherwood Slack. She died Nov. 18, 2005, in Alpine.
She graduated from Coquille High School in 1949, and after several attempts at a higher education in the Pacific Northwest, she left for parts less wet. She lived variously in Germany, the Caribbean, the American Southwest and California. She was a writer and although none of her novels or screenplays was published, several of her stories and articles were published in various magazines and, for a while, she was a technical writer/editor for CTB McGraw Hill.
She married James Wright of Palo Alto, Calif., in 1961.
In September, after it became apparent that further medical treatment likely would not improve her quality of life, Judy chose never again to set foot in a hospital or doctor’s office. It was her great wish to pass away on her own terms in her home. A playful and stubborn spirit, Judy, as was so often the case, got her way.
She is survived by her daughter, Jan Wright of San Diego; son, Perry Wright of San Diego; grandchildren Isabella and Guy; brother and sister-in-law, Harry A. Slack Jr. and JoAnne Slack of Coos County; nephew, Joe Slack; niece, Helen Slack Miller; and good friend and cousin, Rocky Wolfe.
