Biography

William Berry was born about 1828 in Three Churches, Hampshire Co., VA (now WV), 1860 census age of 37 is clearly too old.1,2 He married Nancy Welsh on 3 November 1853 in Tazewell Co., IL. He died on 31 July 1869 in Pekin Jail, Pekin, Tazewell Co., IL. He was buried in August 1869 in Woodrow Cemetery (unmarked grave adjacent to his mother's), Cincinnati Twp., Tazewell Co., IL.

Note: William Berry ("Bill"), born at Three Churches, Hampshire County, Virginia, about 1828, is said to have married his uncle's (Samuel Berry's) housekeeper, Nancy Welsh. William became the leader of "the Berry Gang," a notorious gang of horse thieves and robbers that terrorized Tazewell County in the 1860's. The gang included William's brothers Isaac "Ike", Emanuel, and Simeon, but not their brother James. Bill got into a fight with 21 year old George W. Pepper of Delavan, Illinois, on 1 September 1868. Bill slashed Pepper across the stomach, spilling his entrails. Pepper died 3 September. Bill was taken to Joliet State Prison, but was pardoned before he served any time. On the night of 30 July 1869, Deputy Henry Pratt, a Civil War hero, led a small posse to Circleville to arrest the Berry Gang. Ike Berry shot and killed Pratt. Bill was blamed for it, arrested, and jailed in Pekin, Illinois. A huge mob broke into the jail about midnight or shortly thereafter, shot and mortally wounded Bill Berry in a melee in the jail, and hung him by the neck from a nearby tree where he died on 31 July. Ike and the remainder of the gang were captured and sent to prison. William Berry was buried at Woodrow Cemetery, South Pekin, next to his mother, in an unmarked grave. Information is from the book Lynch Law by Jim Conover and James Brecher, Lynch Law Productions, Pekin, IL, DEC 1998. Cause of death: on 31 July 1869 Lynched for murder of George W. Pepper in 1868. His brother Ike was the actual shooter.
