Frederick News Post, Maryland, Wednesday, March 13, 1974.
Standing over eight inches tall, the steeple of the Saint John's Church towers over the other nine buildings. Their creator, Dr. John Culler, stands above it all. Culler is no Lilliputian but in his world 20 feet equals one inch. Last year the 57-year old Frederick surgeon reconstructed ten of Frederick's oldest and best known buildings...in miniature. And starting this spring the models will become a permanent display at the Rose Hill Manor tourist exhibit. "They're all part of the walking tour of Frederick," Culler explains. "I thought if we had something to show people and guide them Rose Hill Manor will become a more popular tourist center. Each model is scaled down precisely. They are built with construction cardboard and ornamented with hand crafted metal fittings. Culler notes that the ten original structures are over 100 years old. "The newest ones were built between 1850 and 1860 and many of the old plans have been lost. So I had to go down and measure the buildings myself," Culler says. The collection includes the five churches which compose the spires of Frederick, the Barbara Fritchie House, the Hessian Barricks, the Taney House, the Steiner House and the Independence Engine House. After recording the dimensions of the buildings, Culler scales the dimensions down to his ratio of 20 feets equals one inch. Culler recalls that in measuring one church no one knew how high it was and it took the pastor six weeks to find out. In his work Culler has noticed several unusual designs in the buildings. "The Lutheran Church steeples are not perfectly square...they're octagonal," he says. Culler started the project in February, 1973 and completed a model a month. He says this is the latest modeling project in a hobby which first started in 1938 when he became interested in building trains. "I've been building models practically my whole life," he says. "I started building models in the Lionel (train) size and then I evolved to H-0 size and then these which are less than half H-O size," he says. Culler says he first became interested in constructing his historic building display over a year ago when Mrs. Charles Sanner took note of his talents and suggested that he try modeling several of Frederick's historic buildings. Culler grabbed the suggestion and started his models. "I particularly wanted to do the churches which make up the spires of Frederick, the Hessian Barracks and several other well-known buildings." "Each one took a lot of background work and since I modeled these after the original buildings I had to get pictures of the original building," he said. Culler, who has been surgeon for the Independent Fire Company for 20 years started his task with the Independent Engine House. His model is copied after the original building which was built in 1818. "The company has a pictoral history of the building so I got most of my information there," Culler says. "But for the other buildings I went to the Sanborn map (an insurance company map which keeps an up to date record of the buildings in Frederick) for a lot of the dimensions." Although Culler says he is taking a short break in his modeling he plans to build models of the present court house, the B & 0 Railroad Station and City Hall. Presently his models are on display at Rice's Color Center at the intersection of Fifth and North Market Streets. They will be moved to Rose Hill Manor later this spring.
