Willie Reeves Hardin Bivins wrote (via Tracy DeVault):
Reeves had a long downhill road for more than two years -- kidney failure and extremely painful neuropathy. After an especially bad night, he died at home in his bed. The Episcopal Bishop, a good friend, gave him Holy Communion the last time a week before his death.
Reeves had been working with the Mormon group who were microfilming all his genealogical material for their archives. Ursula wrote in Dec 1993 that she would soon be arranging for his collection to be picked up. She felt sad, because it had been part of Reeves for so many years.
TRIBUTE TO EDWARD EARL "REEVES" REEVES-GRAYBILL
(From Tracy DeVault -- "The following was written by his wife at the time of Reeves' death. I found it with his genealogy papers at the LDS library in Salt Lake City, Utah."):
On March 20, 1993, our beloved husband, father and grandfather died at the age of 71 after many years of intense suffering.
He is survived by his wife Ursula S. Reeves-Graybill of 5209 Chippawa Place, Alexandria, VA 22312; son Claude A. Reeves-Graybill of 9026 Backlick Road, Ft. Belvoir, VA 22060; daughter Monika M. Daniel, son-in-law William R. Daniel and three grandchildren Michael, Stephen and Christina of 8729 Lea Lane, Alexandria, VA 22309.
Reeves' downhill road began over two years ago with the failure of his kidneys. Additionally, he suffered the most excruciation pain because of diabetic neuropathy, nerve damage, under the feet, neck hands and stomach. He was bloated by excessive fluid and very uncomfortable. He could hardly walk anymore, shuffled behind me, his wife, leaning heavily on my shoulders. He often got dizzy, sliding right off my back hitting the hard floor. Reeves tolerated his blindness and extreme pain for over twenty years with the support of volunteers, who helped him in his research in genealogy. This research material filled over 158 binders, two to four inches thick, and manuscript boxes, all of which was microfilmed. Ancestral charts were compiled with Reeves and Graybill crests and coat-of-arms mounted. This hobby, with the help of these beautiful people almost daily for two hours, made his life bearable and gave it purpose. He loved his wife, children, grandchildren and home he created.
Lately, he could not even go upstairs without my assistance. I had to pull him up on his pants with every second step during which he moaned "O' Frauchen. O' Frauchen," meaning my little/dear wife. The night from Friday to Saturday began normal with supper consisting of oatmeal, bran, hard wheat and a prune. He no longer ate meat, starches and vegetables. Then I heard calls of distress - he complained of an upset stomach which I treated with Pepto-Bismol and later peppermint water. He had pain in the lift side which he had often for many, many years. He lived off pain killers around the clock. When he broke out in a sweat I took a blood glucose test which was normal. The pain became more intense and he wanted me to call the Doctor. It was 11:00 p.m. when he got back with us suggesting only an ice pack, which Reeves refused, and an extra pain killer. After 1:00 a.m. Reeves again was drenched in perspiration and this time the blood glucose test showed a skyrocketing 446!!! -- 150 is about normal. I gave him an injection of Regular Insulin that acts immediately. His pajama was completely soaked, to change it proved to be extremely difficult, he could neither sit up nor stand up. He had no strength left and prayed to the Father to take him. He moaned louder and louder calling for me. I sat on his bed searching for a passage in the Anglican Missal which I never found. Finally, he quieted down around 2:30 a.m.
Next morning after half an hour of chores I went upstairs to wake him up and get him started, I washed and dressed him for many months because he could no longer stand up, no response ------ he was dead. The rescue league, ambulance and police were here within three minutes of my call and confirmed his death.
My children came soon afterwards and were the most beautiful support for me, particularly my heartbroken daughter Monika, who from then on did not leave me out of her sight and requested I go home with her and spend the night. Being with the lively grandchildren did not give me much chance to think of my grief. The whole family was together including Claude.
A great highlight during Reeves' last year was the periodic visits from the Bishop of the Episcopal Church in our area, a tremendous personality, both men enjoyed each other's company. The Bishop gave Reeves Holy Communion the last time one week before his death.
Reeves has been my joy and happiness for over forty-two years -- I shall grieve over him and miss him forever!
3-26-93 Ursula.
