Richard Overton Harper, Jr.

Richard Overton Harper, Jr., of Appleton, WI, formerly of Danville, VA, passed away on Friday, February 27, 2009, surrounded by his loving family and pastor.

He was born January 14, 1946, in Danville to the late Richard Overton Harper and Florence Waldo Harper.

Richard married Diane Boy on August 9, 1968, and she survives him.

Richard grew up in the Mt. Hermon community and was a member of Mt. Hermon Baptist Church.    He was a graduate of George Washington High School, Wingate College, and the University of Georgia. Richard served as an officer in the Virginia Army National Guard, as the Youth Director at the YMCA of Danville, and was a licensed insurance and real estate agent.    He served as the Vice-President of the National Crop Insurance Association and representative of the southern region. Richard retired in 2005 as President and Owner of Interstate Motor Supply, Inc., Blairs, VA.

Richard was a member of First Baptist Church of Danville for forty years where he taught Sunday school, served on many committees and was an ordained Deacon. While a resident in Appleton, WI, he was active at Emmanuel United Methodist Church.

Richard was very active in the community through his many civic activities, including the Danville Museum of Fine Arts and History, Chatham Rotary Club, Hargrave Military Academy Order of the Sabre, Life Member, Young Men's Club, National Association of Realtors, Virginia Association of Realtors, Virginia Association of Independent Insurance Agents, Danville Chamber of Commerce, American Engine Rebuilders Association, Boy Scouts of America, and the Danville Golf Club.

Richard was predeceased by his parents and infant daughter, Anne Howe Harper, and brother-in-law, Melvin C. Vernon, Jr.

Richard is survived by his wife of 40 years Diane, his daughter, Meredith Harper Kiesnowski and husband Dr. Brian Kiesnowski, of Appleton, WI, and son, R. Overton Harper, III and his wife Dr. Amy V. Harper, of Kernersville, N.C. Richard is also survived by four grandchildren, Thomas Joseph Kiesnowski, II, David Richard Kiesnowski, Caroline Elva Diane Kiesnowski, and Hayden Marie Harper. Richard is survived by three sisters, Nita Robyn McElreath, and her husband J. Gilbert McElreath, of Dallas, TX, Jean Carol Harper Vernon, of Danville, Va., and Barbara Harper Carter, and her husband Owen T. Carter, of Calabassas (sic.), Ca. Richard is survived by his brother-in-law David C. Boy, III, and his wife Karla L. Boy, of Cumming, GA. Richard is also survived by the following nieces and nephews: Melvin C. Vernon, III, John. W. McElreath, Robert Hutchings Vernon, Robyn M. Poole, Karen C. Cox, Thomas G. McElreath, Richard T. Carter, Ruth B. Lykins, and David C. Boy, IV. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at the First Baptist Church, Danville, VA, at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 7, 2009, with Rev. Stephen H. Cook and Rev. Joseph C. Northern, officiating.
