Obituary -- (Findagrave.com):

Age 72Y 6M 28D
Company C, 11 Pennsylvania Cavalry
G.A.R. Marker

Thank you to Dennis Brandt for the following information:

The son of David & Catherine (Kegereis) Clippinger, in 1860 he was a laborer and blacksmith living in Metal Township, Franklin County, Pennsylvania. He stood 5' 11" tall and had light hair and hazel eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted at Burnt Cabins, Fulton County, October 14, 1861, according to the company register, at the age of thirty-six, an erroneous entry that his compiled military service records lists correctly as twenty-six. He mustered into federal service at Harrisburg October 26 as a private with Co. I, 9th Pennsylvania Cavalry (92nd Pa), but discharged by surgeon's certificate August 22, 1862, in Lebanon, Kentucky, after suffering a right inguinal scrotal hernia that made riding a horse an excruciating experience. Apparently recovered, he enlisted in Chambersburg January 5, 1864, mustered into federal service at Harrisburg January 18 at the rank of blacksmith with Co. C, 11th Pennsylvania Cavalry (108th Pa), and honorably discharged with his company August 13, 1865.

He married Mary Elizabeth Wineman December 14, 1865, and fathered Sarah E. (b. @1858 - presumed stepdaughter), John E. (b. 01/29/63 - presumed stepson), Franklin Pierce (b. 04/06/66), David (b. 04/01/69), and Anna Elizabeth & Mary Catherine (b. 10/31/71 - Anna d. 10/31/71 and Mary d. 04/05/75). He died in Metal Township, Franklin County, from "pneumonia" with "rheumatism" a contributing factor.

He was buried in March 1911 in Fannettsburg Reformed Church Cemetery, Fannettsburg, Franklin Co., PA, Findagrave #90399450.

a colorado life

Burning bright with passion

By Jim Sheeler

Special to The Denver Post

Aug. 13, 2000 - Her fiance stands in the church courtyard, contemplating last words.

"We would read books together. I used to read them out loud to her," he says. "She used to love me reading to her. She would lie down with her head on my shoulder and follow the words as I read."

He stares into the yard and takes a drag on his cigarette.

"We had just finished this book called "Love in the Time of Cholera,' which is such a beautiful love story about how you could be in love with somebody forever," he says. "These people in the story wait and wait and wait, and when they are 80 years old their bodies have aged but their feelings haven't changed."

Nearby, inside First United Methodist Church in Fort Collins, hundreds of people from around the world are talking about the same young woman. They talk about the full lifetime she had ahead of her, and the one she left behind.

Outside in the courtyard, Amir Anvarzadeh is still thinking of her head on his shoulder and the words she never saw.

"We were reading this book called "One,' which is a phenomenal book. It's about how lives of different people come together and in the end were one," he says.

"We were only halfway finished with it." Esther Lawton died June 4 in London. She was 25.

"I'm looking at the world"

She was born looking out.

"Most babies are born face down. She was born face up. Most babies cry. She didn't make a sound," says her father, Robert Lawton. "She seemed to be saying, "Hey, I'm looking at the world.'- "

Early in her life, Esther's family moved around the state, often living in mobile homes near resort mountain towns, which was about all they could afford on her father's U.S. Forest Service salary and her mother's teaching money.
