The Rev. Dr. Robert A. Poland
The Rev. Robert A. Poland, 88, of Newburgh, died Sunday, Sept. 24, 2006, at Cypress Grove Rehabilitation Center in Newburgh.
Born July 23, 1918, to Frank and Sadie Poland in Canandaigua, N.Y., Bob grew up in Rochester, N.Y. He graduated from Charlotte High School in Rochester, N.Y., Roberts Wesleyan College, North Chili, N.Y. (Associate of Arts), Seattle Pacific University, Seattle, Wash. (Bachelor of Arts in Music and English), and Dubuque Seminary, Dubuque, Iowa (Master of Divinity and Master of Theology). Dr. Poland was ordained a Presbyterian Minister (PCUSA) in Jan. 1945 in his home church, Bethany Presbyterian, in Rochester, N.Y. He later did graduate work at Boston School of Theology in Boston, Mass., and received a Doctor of Theology degree from Bethany Divinity School, St. Petersburg, Fla. His Doctoral Thesis was on Junior Choirs in the Presbyterian Church.
Dr. Bob served Presbyterian churches in Rochester (Westminster) and Buffalo (Covenant) N.Y.; Tampa (Seminole) Fla.; Des Peres, (First) Wisc., Evansville, (Olivet & Interim St. Andrew’s) Ind., Raytown, (Blue Ridge) Mo., Grimes, (First), Johnston (St. Paul) and Des Moines (Interim at Douglas Avenue) Iowa. He served as Moderator, Presbytery of Winnebago (Wisconsin) in 1957 and Presbytery of Vincennes (Indiana) in 1962. He retired in 1982. During his tenure in Tampa, Fla., he originated the sermon-in-song, a combination of preaching and singing and received national recognition for it.
Dr. Bob was a 50-year member of the following: Newburgh Lodge No. 174, A & FM of Newburgh, Scottish Rite Valley of Evansville, and Hadi Shrine Temple, Evansville, where he served as chaplain for several years. He was also a member of Bethlehem Shrine No. 2, White Shrine of Jerusalem, Evansville, Ind., former member of Friendship Chapter No. 32, Order of the Eastern Star, Newburgh, Ind., and past president of Downtown High Twelve Club, Evansville, Ind.
Dr. Poland is survived by his wife of 60 years, Patricia; three children, Patty Poland Wheeler of Evansville, Robert A. II (Kimberly) of Folsomville, Ind., and David (Linda) of Lansdale, Pa.; three grandchildren, Suzanne Poland Datin (Jeff) of Rome, Italy, Cherish Wheeler Duckworth (Brian) of Carmi, Ill., and Bart Wheeler of Evansville; four great-grandchildren, Sarah, Jason and James Datin and Tori Duckworth; two sisters and their husbands, Betty Moffett (Nate) Rochester, N.Y., and Margaret Batcher (Charles) of Long Island, N.Y.; and a cousin, Mabel Bateman of Howard, Ohio.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Sadie Poland.
The family of Dr. Bob wishes to extend its thanks to the caring staff at Cypress Grove Rehabilitation and Southern Care (Hospice).
Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Newburgh Presbyterian Church with the Reverends Kathleen Fox and David M. Poland officiating, entombment in Alexander Memorial Park Mausoleum. Friends may visit with the family at Alexander East Chapel from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday with Masonic services at 7 p.m.
