Don Buel Lairmore, 79, passed away from surgical complications on Sunday, Sept. 19, 2010, in Columbia, surrounded by family.
A private graveside service for the immediate family will be held Friday, Oct. 8, followed by an open memorial celebration at 1 p.m. at Evangelical Free Church of Columbia, 600 Silvey St.
He was born on Aug. 20, 1931, in Jefferson City to Victor and Mabel Buel Lairmore.
He graduated from Jefferson City High School in 1949, and served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War.
Don married his lifelong love, Patricia Joan Freise, on Oct. 3, 1951, in Union, and the couple raised four children in Moberly. They met at Hoemeyer Drug Store, where Pat was having a soda and Don stopped for shaving cream en route to Scott Air Force Base. They enjoyed 58 years of marriage, 20 of which were in Southern California, where they appreciated many sunsets together. In 1992, they moved to Columbia to be near family.
Don was a self-made businessman and got an early start at age 12, setting pins for a bowling alley. He held various odd jobs through school and was known to be an adept pool player. In 1943, his father died after being struck by a car while crossing the street, a tragedy that profoundly influenced his life and drive to succeed.
After the military, Don worked in Moberly for Uregas Propane, establishing its finance company, Budget Investment Corp. He later served as a national marketing representative for Kwik Kold. Don's entrepreneurial spirit and sales expertise led him to the West Coast, where he had numerous successful real estate and mortgage brokerage endeavors. After moving to Columbia, he launched a correspondent lending program for Union Planters, now Regions Bank, retiring in 2003 as senior vice president. He later led project management efforts for Center State Crossing. Don was a licensed agent with Plaza Real Estate and United Country. He had many professional achievements, though was most recently proud of having attracted Menard's to Columbia.
Never satisfied to retire completely, he remained active with investments.
His children and grandchildren were the highlight of his life.
Don will be remembered for his charm, wit, wide grin, twinkling eyes, generous nature, compassion, intelligence and adventurous spirit.
He is survived by his wife, Patricia; son Stephen and his wife, Emmanuelle, of Irvine, Calif.; son, Michael and his wife, Pam, of Liberty Hill, Texas; daughters Barbara O'Gorman and Susan and her husband, Greg Reeves, all of Columbia; 11 grandchildren, Elizabeth Bilyeu, Nikona and Kaylana Geurin, Ed and Holden Goryl, Jean-Victor and Aurelien Lairmore, Megan and Vaughn O'Gorman, and Andrea and Kathleen Reeves; and sisters Dorothy Lairmore and Dolores Werdehausen, both of Jefferson City, and Donna Gregory of Columbia.
NOTE: Elizabeth Anne Bilyeu, maiden name Lairmore, born 18 JAN 1978 in Missouri, was listed as a senior in the 1996 yearbook of Rock Bridge High School, Columbia, MO, and was previously listed there in 1995. Her street address in 1995 was the same as Donald and Patricia's -- apparently she was living with them at the time. Cannot determine whether she was a daughter of Stephen or of Michael Lairmore. She lived during 2015-2020 at Exeter, Barry Co., MO.
Nikona and Kaylana Geurin were children of Michael's wife Pam from a previous marriage.
He was buried in September 2010 in Columbia Cemetery, Columbia, Boone Co., MO, Findagrave #100846505.
