Marjorie Ann Smith, 77 of Ashland, passed away Thursday, Dec. 8, 2011, in Community Hospice Care Center in Ashland.

She was born Aug. 27, 1934, in Jackson, Ohio, to the late Emmett O. Rice and Beatrice Foster.

She was a homemaker and a member of the South Ashland Garden Club and South Ashland Lions Club. She was a former volunteer at King’s Daughters Medical Center in Ashland and attended South Ashland Methodist Church.

She was preceded in death, along with her parents, by her husband, James Smith, in 2000, a son Randy Rice; and a granddaughter, Twana.

Her survivors include her companion, Bill Griggs of Ashland; a son, James Eugene Smith of Hamilton, Ohio; a daughter, Linda Southers and Finance Bob McComas of Catlettsburg; four grandchildren, Amy Chesney, Jeanetta McCain, Roger Smith and Amber Bell; 11 great-grandchildren; a brother, Larry J. Gillespie of Columbus, Ohio; and two sisters, Dottie Landrum of Jackson, Ohio, and Linda Lou Johnson of Waverly, Ohio.

The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Monday, Dec. 12, 2011, at Lazear Funeral Home in Ashland by the Rev. Leon Dalton. Interment will be in Ashland Cemetery.

Friends may call from noon to 1 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Community Hospice Care Center, 2330 Pollard Road, Ashland, KY 41101.

She was a member of Poage Chapter DAR.

Marjorie was apparently adopted by Emmett and Beatrice shortly after her birth -- she was living with them as of April, 1940 and thereafter until she was married, listed as "daughter" on the 1940 and 1950 censuses. Her biological mother's 1984 obituary lists Marjorie Ann Smith of Kentucky as a survivor, so there was an awareness of her adoption before that date. DLB 2026.

She was buried in December 2011 in Ashland Cemetery, Ashland, Boyd Co., KY, Findagrave #76272961.

Billy Ellis Sagraves married Margie Lou Hunt shortly after this timeframe and they had a son, Anthony Wayne Sagraves, born 24 AUG 1969.

She was born August 18, 1928 to the late William H. and Eva Mae (Buckley) Sanderson in Lancaster, Ohio. Lived in Cardington, Ohio in her early life and later on the Hilltop and graduated from West High School. Employed for 39 years at DCSC and retired 25 years ago. Member of First Community Church. Enjoyed playing bridge and other card games with friends. Traveled extensively with her husband to many beautiful and interesting parts of the world.
