Jacob Jr. came to Tennessee with his father when he was about 13 years old (1827-1828). In the census of 1840 Jacob Jr. was listed as a farmer. In 1850 he was living with his first cousin, David Kitzmiller. He stayed with the Kitzmillers until his marriage on July 21, 1852, when he was 37 years old. No record of this marriage has been found in Burke County, North Carolina.

Letter from Miss Nancy Louise DeVault to Newland DeVault:

"I visited my Grandfather on several occasions when I was quite young -- when I knew my Grandfather, he seldom left the house, did not use glasses and could read well without -- my two Uncles Frank and Ed, lived with him. Neither were married until after his death (in 1908), when Ed married my mother two years after my father's death (Hugh). The farm is still in the family, but is being sold since my mother's death (1951). It's seven miles from Morganton in Burke Co., N. C. on the Bowa River. Most of the homeplace came from my grandmother's family, Alexander, 50 acres of which was a land grant. We children would like to keep it in the family, but so many heirs it had to be sold."

On December 26, 1862, Jacob A. DeVault received a land grant from the State of North Carolina containing 50 acres in Burke Co., North Carolina (Number 6461, recorded in Book F-3, Page 291).

Jacob A. DeVault was christened on 12 October 1815 in St. Matthew Lutheran Church, Hanover, York Co., PA. He lived in December 1850.¹ He lived in Burke Co., NC.
