Carol Shearer, 74, of North Platte, passed away August 20, 2016, at her home. She was born on June 10, 1942, in Ogallala to George and Gertrude (Harris) Cross. Carol graduated from Arthur High School in 1960. She was united in marriage to Donald Lee Shearer in 1972 at Grant and moved to Brady that same year. She lived in Brady for 17 years where they owned and operated Stuckey’s and moved? to? North Platte for the past 26 years. She was also employed by Hehnke’s in Paxton, Sixth Street, Country General and The Dollar Store, retiring in 2011. She was a member of the Eagles Club. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a stepson, Doug Shearer; granddaughter, Erin Shearer; and niece, Karen Kramer. She is survived by daughter, Julie (Mike) Snider of North Platte; stepson, Dondi (Ronda) Shearer of Kearney; brothers, Jay (Janet) Cross of Menlo Park, California and Gary (Judy) Cross of Ogallala; sisters, Ann (Bob) Kramer of North Platte and Marge (Leonard) Sherman of Loveland, Colorado; granddaughters, Heather (Jordan Warner) Shearer of Cozad, Mandy (Benny Torrez) Snider of Twin Falls, Idaho and Brooke Shearer of Kearney; grandsons, Devin (Brittany Pochop) Dunbar and Drew Dunbar both of North Platte; great grandchildren, Dylan, Elaina and Jaxon of North Platte and Twin Falls, Idaho; also many nieces and nephews. Memorials may be made in her memory. A celebration of Carol’s life will be at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 27, at First United Methodist Church. When Federal Crop Insurance started in 1938 through an Act of Congress, its first employee was Eldon Colby. Eldon traveled "the field" in his early years with the FCIC and in his trips across the country often stopped in Iowa to visit his parents and brother, Cecil. In addition to working for the FCIC for 37 years, Eldon was mayor of Falls Church, VA in the 1950's, a member of the National Press Club, and an active member of the Episcopal Church. His son, Eldon, lives at the family home at 3415 Blair Rd. Falls Church, Virginia. Merrill Eldon Colby was graduated in 1931 in University of Nebrasksa, NE.

Note: Cecil grew up on a farm 2 miles south of Smith Center Kansas. In 1928 he attended the University of Nebraska with a goal of becoming a coach (played football there for one semester). Because of the Depression, he returned to Smith Center where he worked in the Smith County court house and started dating Josephine Francis. They married in 1936 and in 1942 with daughter Lyntha moved to Spokane, Washington where Cecil worked 1 ½ years as a carpenter at an aluminum rolling mill (Eldon ,Virginia and daughter Marilyn were there at that time because Eldon was stationed there with the U.S. Department of Agriculture. After he fell and broke his heel, Cecil quit and returned for a brief home visit to Smith County before moving to Iowa. According to Josephine, Cecil always wanted to farm in Iowa, so after the war, they moved to a farm near Ackley and lived there for the next 52 years. Parents Vergie and Merrill Colby joined them in the late 40s. Cecil was an avid sportsman: played golf and participated in archery club-making his own bows and arrows.
