Letter of Sara Long, Sixth April 1847
By Josette Bright - May 13, 2000
Page 305-306 of "The Big Long Family In America" by Harvey Long.
Daniel's daughter Sara (64), seventh child and 6th of eight daughters and four sons, was not yet 18 when they arrived in Illinois and when she wrote the long indistinct letter of April 1847 consisting of three and a half pages 8 by 13 inches. I will not attempt to transcribe it; but will abstract parts.
The next January, 18-year-old Sarah married Samuel C. Price, 10 years her senior. Her ailing mother had died in May, a month after writing this letter. Sarah also died, at age 36 after bearing six Price children and is buried in the Price family lot in the Salem Church, Cedar Hill, Cemetery 3 miles SE of Mt. Morris.
As an afterthought, Sarah wrote a paragraph on page four telling how her mother was worse with the tightness in her chest; how S. Coffman takes her through a course every three days-giving her twelve "vomits"; "we are all in hopes she will get her health back." Her mother went "down to see the girls last Monday-the first time out of the house since Christmas."
"We moved to the farm last Thursday and all of the girls ere with us. Six wagons, including Dave, Isaac, Dan Z, William, Dan? and five girls and four boys in another wagon. We are all pleased with our new home. It is the prettiest place in Ogle County; the house stands on a hill and we can see three miles across the prarie....
"We have been purty busy this winter. We have done all our sewing; Liz has mad all our dresses and I pressed. Liz is pressing her Philadelphia beauty. We also did a good deal of sewing for the girls. One or the other of us was with them all winter. I was with Mary (Zellers) three weeks when she was confined. She got a fine little daughter, now seven weeks old, named 'Ellenora' (Elenore (Ella) Zellers, b 19 Feb 1847; m. Henry Row; see #62) Sara (62) is a very delicate little child. (Sara, b 1845, m Jacob G. Rowland, later a merchant, Dallas Center, IA) Nancy (Mrs. William Young (60) has the fattest and prettiest baby I most ever saw. It just begins to creep; his name is Henry (Henry Young in 1906 was an M.D. living in Manson, Calhoun Co, IA, 19 miles west of Fort Dodge; he was also a state senator)
"I must tell you that there are more children in this country than anywhere else. They tumble them into their wagons and off they go. There are always six or eight babies at meetings."
"I will tell you how we unpacked our things (from the wagons driven from Maryland and Illinois). Nothing broke but the apple butter crock.....It did not spoil anything...."
"Joseph Rice and Dave Rice and family are going to start to the east tomorrow. Answer this directly.
Sara Long Miller"
The addressed portion on page four has a large "10" in the place where the stamp would be on a modern letter, and below:
"to Abraham Miller Hagerstown Washington County Maryland"
Above in this place is a circular black hand stamp imprint "Oregon April 17 ILL"
The third letter in possession of the writer is the sad two page missile in the script of Daniel Long (16) and dated August 14, 1847. I will excerpt translated parts of the letter.
He starts with thanks for good health of all -- at least they were last Sunday when they were at the meeting at nearby Rice school house and "they all went with me home for dinner except William (Young) and Nancy they went to Daniel Wolfs and took their dinner there. Your Uncle Jacob Long (14) and nearly all his family were with me that day. But how often I have to wish you were here to come to our meeting to hear the preaching and see the number of people who come together. You would hardly believe there were so many people in the country and they all appear to be desirous to hear and to know what will be beneficial to their soul salvation. There were twelve or fourteen added to the church this spring. Yes beloved (Catharine) I do wish from the bottom of my heart that you were here to be with your brothers and sisters....
"But dear children if you were all here today there would still be one wanting that would not be here which is your dear mother. Oh if I could tell you of the lonesome hours that I have to pass away... I cant tell you my feelings and sadness at heart. When I went from home and came home she would meet me with a smiling face. But now she is not more...."
Then Daniel told about the crops and the country, good and bad, including "we had a frost about the 20th of July and froze all the corn in the low ground.... We all join in sending our sincere love to you all and all enquiring friends.
Daniel Long to Abraham Miller."
