Josephus Oliver Born 1838 - Died 1920
Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord, that they may rest from their labors and their works do follow them-- Revelation 14:13.
After nearly fifty years of consecutive service as an elder of the church, and life of exceptional saintliness and service, Josephus Oliver fell asleep in Jesus at his home in Chickasha, Oklahoma, July25, 1920. He was born in Richmond, Kentucky, March 26, 1838, thus being more than four score years of age at the time of his death. He remained in Kentucky until 1865 when he engaged in the mercantile business in Illinois. During this same year he was married to Miss Pauline McNitt with whom his golden wedding was celebrated in 1915, amid the rejoicing of all their living children and many friends.
In 1881, he moved with his family to Nebraska where he resided until he moved to Chickasha, Okla., about fifteen years ago, since which time he has lived in dignified retirement. He had been in some-what frail health for some years, but his condition was not considered serious until a very few days before the end.
The funeral services were conducted at the family residence by Clifford B James, Pastor of the First Christian Church.
Of his five children, Ella May and Claude had preceded him to the better land some years ago. His wife and three surviving children, Mrs. L. L. Price and Miss Blanche of Chickasha, and Ralph E Oliver of Superior, Nebraska, were all present at the time of his death. Great as is their sense of grief and loss, they find their comfort in the memory of a life of unusual beauty and consecration and their glorious hopes of a happy and eternal reunion through his Lord and theirs. They are assured that for him "to die is gain," "to depart and be with Christ is far better."-G.Lyle Smith.
