Leonard Anderson Starling, one of the long time residents of Henry County, died at his home in the southeastern part of Henry County, Sunday, February 24th.

He was the son of Edward T. and Mary Anderson Starling and was born near Chatham in this county, July 16, 1846, and except for the time he followed the fortunes of the Confederacy as a member of Company R, Third Virginia Cavalry, lived in this county all his life.

In 1885 he married Miss Mariah Rolls, who preceded him to the grave many years ago.

He his survived by one son, L. A. Starling Jr., who lives on the old homestead.

Also by two brothers, Thomas and Ballard Starling, who live in the Aiken Summit section of the county.

Mr. Starling was a typical gentleman of the school of the Old South. He kept an open home, where true hospitality was generously dispensed.

He was reared under the gentle influence of Godly parents and was a steward of the Methodist Church for more than fifty years.

His passing is mourned by a host of friends and relatives who knew and admired his gentle, Christian qualities.



He was buried in February 1929 in Starling Cemetery, Ridgeway, Henry Co., VA, Findagrave #61905049.
Leonard Anderson Starling was also known as "Len" Starling. He began military service Civil War service, Confederate Army, Co. R, 3rd Virginia Cavalry, and Co. K. 46th Virginia Cavalry.

Ballard Preston Starling, well-known farmer of the Cascade community, died Tuesday evening at 6:30 o’clock at his home following an illness of several years.

Mr. Starling was born in Henry county in 1860, the son of Ed and Mary Starling. He devoted his life to his community and its interest, and until later years was active with the operation of his farm. He was a member of the Bethel church.

He is survived by one son, Philip N. Starling, three daughters, Miss Hallie Starling and Annie Preston Starling of Cascade and Mrs. Martha Starling Smith of High Point, N.C., and one granddaughter.

His wife, Agnes Duling (sic) Starling, preceded him to the grave 28 years ago.

Funeral services will be held on tomorrow morning at 11 o’clock from the home.

BALLARD P. STARLING CLAIMED BY DEATH.

Ballard Preston Starling, 80, died Tuesday afternoon at his home on the Morgan Ford Road in the southern part of Henry County. Mr. Starling, a member of a pioneer Henry County family and a prominent farmer and big land holder, had been in declining health for sometime. Funeral services will be conducted at the home Thursday. Burial will be in the family plot nearby.

Mr. Starling is survived by four children, a son Philip N. Starling, and three daughters: Misses Hallie Brown Starling and Preston Starling of Henry County, and Mrs. Snow Smith of High Point, N.C. One grandchild, Lula Smith, also survives.

He was born in November 1860, the son of Edmund and Mary Starling, early settlers of Henry County, and was a member of the Bethel Methodist Church, which is situated in the community in which he lived. His wife died 28 years ago this month.

Mrs. Faith Thomas Parrott died Tuesday morning at her home on Church Street, after a lingering illness that lasted over six months. Mrs. Parrott is survived by two sisters, Mrs. H. C. Gravely and Miss Catherine Thomas of Martinsville and one brother, Frank W. Thomas of Topeka, Kansas.

The deceased who was 65 years of age at the time of her death, was for many years an outstanding leader in all movements, social and patriotic and was prominently known throughout Virginia in W. C. T. U. work at one time serving as the corresponding secretary of the state organization.

She was also regent of Patrick Henry Chapter of the D.A.R and took a prominent part in the work of that organization, not only locally but in the state body. Funeral services were held from the home Wednesday morning. Interment was made in Oakwood Cemetery.



She was buried in June 1928 in Oakwood Cemetery, Henry Co., VA, Findagrave #34131032.

MISS KATHERINE S. THOMAS

Miss Katherine Semple Thomas, 88, a member of one of Martinsville's oldest families, died in Martinsville General Hospital at 8:10 p.m. Sunday, following a long illness.

She was born in Martinsville June 30, 1866, the daughter of the late C. Y. and Mary Ann Reamey Thomas, and was a member of the First Methodist Church.

She is survived by three nephews who reside in Martinsville, Benjamin Gravely, R. P. Gravely, Sr., and Harold Gravely, in addition to seven other nephews and three nieces.

Funeral services will be conducted by Dr. A. P. Williams at the McKee Funeral Home chapel at 3 p.m., Tuesday. Burial will follow in Oakwood Cemetery.
