VPI Develops 3 New Barleys

The Virginia Agricultural Experiment Station announced yesterday in Blacksburg that three new varieties of barley have been released for use by farmers.

The varieties, Surry, Henry, and Monroe, combine improved resistance to disease with an increased ability to withstand winter.

The varieties were developed by Thomas M. Starling, Houston M. Camper Jr. and Curtis W. Roane in a joint effort of Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University’s agronomy and plant pathology and physiology departments.

The new plants are generally resistant to powdery mildew, leaf rust and scald.

Because the three appear to offer several advantages over current varieties, the three-year process of testing that would normally be required has been waived.

Adequate supplies of seed will not be available until 1977.
