Obituary of Benjamin Hawley
The subject of this sketch was born in Columbian county, Ohio, October, 1822 and died January 30, 1901. He was married in 1849 to Miss Elizabeth Hester in Columbian county and moved to Illinois and from thence to Iowa. During the year 1883 he moved to Kansas, since which time he has been a resident of Smith county.
He leaves an ever faithful wife and four children to mourn the sad and irreparable loss. The oldest son lives in Dubuque, Iowa, one sister and two brothers in Ohio, and three children in Smith County.
The funeral services were held at the Munsinger school house, at one o'clock p.m., last Friday, conducted by Rev. M. E. Groves, after which the remains were laid to rest in the Fairview cemetery. The body was followed to its eternal resting place by a number of friends and neighbors.
May the sorrowing ones be comforted as He alone comforteth, and live so that they all may meet him in the blessed haven of rest to which he has gone.
He was buried on 1 February 1901 in Fairview Cemetery, Smith Center, Smith Co., KS, Findagrave #127830226.

Residence Shellsburg IA; 26 years old when he enlisted on 8/15/1862 as a corporal. On 11/3/1862 he mustered into Co. K, 40th Iowa Infantry. He was discharged for disability on 11/24/1863 at St. Louis, MO.
He was born near a very large reservoir built for the canal system. He served in the Civil War with troops from Iowa under Generals Grant and Sherman. He got ill at the Siege of Vicksburg from drinking contaminated water and was given up for dead at the Jefferson Barracks in St. Louis. His father came and drove him home to Iowa with a wagon load of blankets, quilts and comforters. He went on to celebrate his 50th Wedding Anniversary. He and several other relatives homesteaded in Oakdale, Ross Township, near Downs, Kansas.
He was buried in March 1920 in Oakdale Cemetery, Downs, Osborne Co., KS, Findagrave #17005354.
Franklin Hull began military service on 15 August 1862 Civil War service, Union Army, Co. K, 40th Iowa Infantry.

She was always called Ellen. Born at Caplinger Mills, Cedar County, Missouri but moved to Iowa at a young age. Her father was a wheelwright and may have helped build the mill there. The family had to get out of town in the middle of the night because people who favored slavery were going to burn them out. Her brother Robert Burns served with General Sherman throughout the Civil War without injury. She worked her way through the Tabor Literary Institute in Tabor, Iowa graduating with honors. She and her husband homesteaded in the Oak Dale Community (near Downs) in Ross Township, Osborne County, Kansas, They raised a large family and celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary together at their retirement home in Downs, Kansas.
She was buried in March 1919 in Oakdale Cemetery, Downs, Osborne Co., KS, Findagrave #45800275.
Sarah Ellen Burns was also known as "Ellen" Burns.

Pallbearers will be Jacob Crabtree, Anthony and Houston Munsinger, Billy Beamer, Robert Luce, Dwain Modisette, Tom Keith and Brandon Bridges.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 15, 2013, at Autry Funeral Home.
