Obituary of Mrs. Eudora Petete:

Eudora Petete departed this life January 15, 1909, five miles southwest of Holdenville, Okla. She was born in

Pickens County, Ala., Aug. 9, 1861. Her maiden name was Eudora Cockrell. She professed religion at the age of

18 and united with the Missionary Baptist Church, with which she remained a member until her death. On the 5th of December, 1882, she was married to Bro. J.L. Petete who still survives her. Of this union there were born ten children, four girls and six boys, all of whom live in the immediate neighborhood of Holdenville. Sister Petete was a devoted Christian , a tender, loving mother and an affectionate and faithful wife. Her life

was full of sunshine and cheerfulness, she always had a kind word for everyone and seemed to delight in making others happy. Her death was sudden, caused by heart failure. This gave no opportunity to impart any dying counsel to her dear bereft husband and children. Her earthly sun sank at noon, but her life doubtless went out like the morning star--in the light of day. We will say to the bereft family, it is hard to give up one so dear, but such is this life. While death comes as the wages of sin, yet we learn that it was once appointed unto man to die, hence it comes by appointment, and by him who doeth all things well. We can only bow in humble submission and pray

thy will be done. Many who knew her are dropping the sympathetic tear and sending up earnest prayers for the bereaved family. Be sure to be ready to meet her in the great beyond.

A Friend.

Petete was also a member of the Masonic Lodge. Survivors include his widow Edna, of the home, 406 N. Walnut; five sons, Hugh, Wichita Falls, Texas; Horace and Spencer city; Harold Okla. Members of his Sunday School Class will be honorary bearers and Hugh Sandlin, Bill Benham, Bontie Abernathy, Barney Evett, Lee Reid, Earl Moore, Speck Broaddus, Bill Nicholson, Wewoka and all peace officers.

Emmit was born in Pickens County, Alabama in 1890, about four miles from Gordo. Before, September of 1892, the family had moved to Judsonia, White County, Arkansas, a small town just outside of Searcy, the County seat. From here the family moved to Houston, Perry County, Arkansas, before November of 1897. Here is where he received all of his education, which was only through the fourth grade. He quit school to help in the fields with his Dad. For by this time there were three more children born, which made a total of eight children still at home. In the winter of 1904 the family came to Holdenville, Oklahoma. This is where Emmitt lived the rest of his life, here in Hughes county. With the death of their parents it left some what of a burden on the children and especially Emmitt as he was the oldest child still at home. He was 19 years old and Uncle Cecil was the youngest at 7 years old. They just batched so that they could stay together. Emmitt farmed and worked at odd jobs around for the neighbors, Ralph Middleton told me one time about Emmitt being at their house late one evening, he told Aunt Annie he had just finished a wagon load of cotton, and he would get up early and sneak out before daylight and get it to town by sun up. Well Ralph said sneak, nothing, you could hear that old wagon for a mile, as he passed their house and woke the whole family.

Emmitt took up carpenter work for awhile, working for Mr. Aaron Horn. They built several houses near Spaulding and out on the end of South Oak and South Broadway Streets in Holdenville. In December of 1914 Emmitt married Edna Martha Cain. This sort of broke up the family. Being as the three older sisters were already married and had homes of their own, they took different ones of the children.
