Pucketts Celebrate 62nd Anniversary
By Mrs. Herman Apple
---------------------------
Mr. and Mrs. T.C. Puckett, who own and operate the Broadway Grocery, 512 South Broadway celebrated
their 62nd Wedding anniversary Saturday. They were married March 7, 1907, buying their marriage license at
Wewoka, Indian Territory. In April, 1929 they moved to their present home and operated their little grocery store which is in one room of their house and across the street from Park View School. Theirs is one of the few stores who still sell penny candy, sometimes having 30 or 40 different kinds to the delight of the children who attend Park View School. For forty years Mrs. Puckett has mothered the Park View children. Binding up skinned knees, wiping noses, calling parents for children and calming the fears of little first graders. Before the school started serving lunches, she made and sold hamburgers. Almost every week visitors from "all over" who used to attend Park View, stop by to see the Pucketts. Many times they bring their children or grandchildren by to purchase "penny candy" from the same candy case that they did when they were children.
Mr. and Mrs. Puckett are the parents Mrs. Herman Apple, her twin brother Gene Puckett, Tulsa and Jerold Puckett, City. The Pucketts are both 81 years old and very active.

Hit By Car, Son Of Police Chief
Critically Hurt
Physicians Fear For Recovery Of Leon Petete, 18
Leon Petete, 18-year-old son of Chief Of Police and Mrs. E. L. Petete, was still unconscious and in a very critical condition this afternoon in a local hospital from head injuries he sustained when struck by an automobile two and one-half miles west of Holdenville on U.S. Highway 270 at 1:00 a.m. this morning. Unable to complete their examination until the boy regains consciousness or some of his lost strength the attending physicians this afternoon could not definitely determine his chances of recovery by were of the opinion they were extremely slim. A constant vigil over the youngster is being maintained. Billy Foster, 21, Oklahoma Baptist University student home for the Christmas holidays, was driver of the car which struck the police chief's son He is held in the custody of authorities pending completion of the investigation into the accident and the
outcome of young Petete's injuries. Petete is believed to have sustained a brain concussion and probably a skull-fracture. His condition does not yet permit of the making of an x-ray examination necessary to determine the exact extent and seriousness of his injuries. He was struck as he was getting back into the car in which he and two companions, Elmer Dee Autry and Tom Bruner, had been opossum hunting. Returning home, the three sighted another opossum running across the highway. Petete got out of the car and with the aid of their dog, caught the animal, which he had put in the car and was getting back into the machine when he was hit by Foster's car. The parked car, with Autry at the wheel, was off the pavement, Harry Davis, highway patrolman who investigated the accident, declared this afternoon. He said Petete landed on top of the Foster car, his head apparently striking a corner of the windshield. His shoulder, Davis said, was believed to have dented the top of the car. After striking parked car Foster's automobile careened into a field, coming to a stop about 175 feet away, Patrolman Davis said both cars were badly damaged but neither overturned. The car driven by Autry was headed toward Holdenville. Young Foster and a companion were en route to Wewoka. The companion was held blameless. Foster, former HHS football star, suffered a badly bruised chest in the crash. He was taken to a hospital for examination this afternoon. This examination revealed young Foster's condition to be considerably worse than was first believed. In addition to an injured chest and two broken ribs, Foster was suffering of shock and mental anguish. He and Petete have been friends for many years. "I am distressed, I pray to god for Leon's recovery." He sobbed
None of the others at the scene of the accident was injured. S.G. Lyons, Holdenville was the first passerby to reach the victims. He rushed Petete and his two companions to Holdenville. Arthur Martin, who lives near the scene of the accident, arrived soon after ward and came in to report the accident to the Chief of Police. Foster and his companion remained at the scene of the accident until Highway Patrolman Davis and W.D. Acton arrived.
