Family Story
Carmen Hill Middleton Remembering Christmas
Carmen Middleton was born in Keota, I.T. to Permelia and John Hill and has lived in Holdenville for 72 years, 52 of those years she has been a member of the Nazarene Church. She married Leo Middleton in Holdenville, October 19, 1924. They had 4 daughters, Wilma Jean, now deceased, Wandine, Reba and Naomi, they also raised 4 grandchildren. Carmen’s first memories of Christmas was of her father coming down the stairs as Santa Claus. They lined cane bottomed chairs in row, for Santa to put their gifts on. Santa would feel the chairs to see if the kids had put pins or tacks on them before depositing the gifts. Presumably this was too see if the children had been good. Carmen never had a Christmas tree until after she married. Leo’s first Christmas gifts to her were a Ruby ring and a Kodak.

The following poem. reminded us so much of Opal:
Give And It Shall Be Given
I helped a neighbor up a hill
And found to my surprise
I was near the peak I sought
And closer to the prize
I helped a blind man in the dark
And found to my delight
I arrived where I was going
As I led him that night
I gave a gift to needy children
And found to great joy
Each child I helped become to me
Like my own girl and boy
I cheered a lonely derelict
And found by healing grief
And touching him to fill and cheer
Christ touched me with His peace.
