Biography

Mary Ann Cantrell was born on 17 March 1820 in Tennessee

The Cantrell Genealogy book shows Mary Ann born 1808, however, an 1851 marriage with a child being born about 1857 casts substantial doubt on that timeframe. There are several gaps in the list of Stephen Cantrell's children, and I believe Mary Ann must have been born much closer to the 1820s timeframe, among the younger children of the family. For the purpose of this presentation, I am accepting the 17 MAR 1820 date shown on the Howell Family Tree genealogy prepared by DSH_Texan, online at ancestry.com. DLB 2019.

She married Dr. Thomas Jefferson Jehoida Howard, son of Robert Howard and Frances Alexander, on 24 June 1851 in Franklin Co., TN, Ceremony by Leroy Jones, Minister of the Gospel. Mary Ann Cantrell died on 7 December 1862 in Pinehill, Rusk Co., TX,

Church, Colonel Benjamin Silliman

Mrs. Church’s maternal ancestors connected her with prominent Southern families. Her mother was Elizabeth Searcy (Cantrell) Van Wyck, daughter of Stephen Cantrell, of Davidson County, Tennessee and niece of Judge Granville Searcy. Stephen Cantrell Sr. received a large tract of land near Nashville for distinguished services in the Indian Wars of North Carolina and was one of the early settlers in Tennessee. Stephen Cantrell Jr., in 1806, married a famous beauty, Juliet Wendell, niece of George Michael Diedrick, an opulent citizen of Nashville, the courtship and marriage taking place in the stately Diedrick mansion, near Nashville, still in possession of the family. Mrs. Church was also related to the Polk, Frentress and other leading Southern families.
