Harry was graduated from William Penn Charter School in Philadelphia, Haverford College in Haverford, Pa., and Cornell University in Ithaca, N.Y. His Ph.D. was earned for the study of herpetology (snakes, salamanders, frogs and other crawly things).

He married Hope Wilson in 1933, a union that lasted until her death in 1992. He is survived by two daughters, Leslie and husband, Philip Bulken, of Bridgewater, and Harriet and husband, Richard Mercer, of Dover Mass.

Two grandsons survive, Edward Bulken and wife, Lori, of Bridgewater, and James Mercer of Brooklyn, N.Y. Great-grandsons are James and wife, Amy, Adam and Patrick Donner.

Harry served in the Virginia Militia prior to World War II. He served in the United Seamen's Service in support of the merchant seamen in the war, across North Africa, the Middle East and Italy, from 1943 to 1945.

Dr. Jopson taught biology at Bridgewater College for 45 years and was honored with the HGM Jopson Chair of Biology, as well as being named professor emeritus in 1981. As pre-med adviser, he was very proud of almost 150 doctors of medicine and dentistry, as well as teachers and business majors.

He coached track and field and cross country at BC and is honored with the gate and field at Jopson Field, Home of the Eagles.

Doc's activities included the Izaak Walton League, North River Watershed Commission, Bridgewater Town Council, Trustee of Planters Bank of Bridgewater (later First Virginia and BB&T), and the School Board of Rockingham County. Massanutten Technical Center was established while he was on the board.

A member of the Emmanuel Episcopal Church from 1936 until his death, Harry served as vestryman, warden and chairman of many committees, including the building of the church on South Main Street.
