Charlotte Sniffen Bensey

Charlotte Sniffen Bensey, age 82 of Harriman, passed away June 12 at the home of her daughter, Betty, in Pascagoula, MS. As she made her transition, she was surrounded by her daughters, Linda and Betty, her son-in-law, Leslie Jerome, her nurse, Samantha Williams, RN from Hospice of Light and minister, Rev. John Tucker, of Safe Harbor Methodist Church.

Fondly called, "Miss Charlotte", she was a homemaker, loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother not only to her biological family, but to an extended family of friends and loved ones. Professionally, she worked for over thirty years with the Tennessee Department of Conservation in the Forestry Division. She was active in the Woods Chapel Methodist Church and First United Methodist Church in Harriman, where she served as a district youth leader. She was a Cub Scout leader, worked within the Juvenile Court System, and was a founding member of the Cornstalk Heights Historic District.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank Nelson Bensey, Jr., who died July 4, 2006; parents, Edgar H. Sniffen and Minnie Myers Sniffen; sisters, Dorothy Sniffen, and Catherine Gallaher; brothers, Joe, Mark, and Sam Wheeler.

She is survived by her children: Linda K. Bensey, and Elizabeth A. Bensey and husband, Leslie Jerome, Frank N. "Buddy" Bensey, III and his wife Teresa, Shawn E. Bensey and his wife, Annie, and Michael W. Bensey and his wife, Margery of Knoxville; grandchildren: Kiernan Bensey, son of Michael and Margery Bensey and Ambree Rogers, daughter of Linda Bensey and wife of Chris Rogers; great grandchildren: Landon and Adelyn Rogers, and a host of other family, friends and loved ones.

A private interment was held June 22 in the Roane Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, and in memory of Charlotte's love of children, the family requests you send donations to a children's charity of your choice. Davis Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

She was buried in June 2007 in Roane Memorial Gardens, Harriman, Roane Co., TN.

DOROTHY SNIFFEN

Dorothy Elizabeth Sniffen, 14, former St. Petersburg resident who left here one year ago to make her home in Tennessee died in LaFollette on Jan. 29 of complications following scarlet fever. Word of her death was received this week by friends of the family.

The young girl was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. E. H. Sniffen who had lived here for a number of years until 1941. She attended local schools and was at the home of an uncle and aunt in LaFollette when she succumbed.

Survivors, in addition to her parents, also include two sisters, Charlotte Ann Sniffen and Mrs. Rhea Gallaher of Wheat, Tenn., and three half brothers, Joe Wheeler, this city, and Mark and Sam Wheeler.

She was buried in February 1942 in Woodlawn Cemetery, LaFollette, Campbell Co., TN, Findagrave #10617280.
Cause of death: Complications following scarlet fever.

GEMMILL, WILLARD BEHARRELL (Sixty-fifth Justice)

Justice Gemmill was born on August 7, 1875 in Rigdon, Indiana, and died May 24, 1935 in Marion, Indiana. He received a Bachelor of Philosophy from DePauw University in 1897 and an LL.B. from the Indiana Law School in 1902. He was admitted to the Indiana bar in 1902 and practiced law in Marion, Indiana. He served in the Indiana House of Representatives from 1909 to 1911 and in the Indiana Senate from 1914 to 1918. He became Marion City Attorney in 1918, but resigned after only one month to take the position of Indiana Special Deputy Attorney General. After having served in that capacity from 1918 to 1920, he resigned to return to private law practice. He was an Indiana Supreme Court Justice from 1925 to 1931. After losing a re-election bid, he returned to Marion to practice with the law firm of Gemmill, Brown & Campbell.

BENSEY, MR. FRANK N., JR. - age 83 of Harriman, passed away Tuesday July 4, 2006 at Roane Medical Center. He attended Berea College in Kentucky until the onset of WW II at which time he enlisted in the United States Navy. Frank served in an additional 17 years in the Naval Reserve after the war. He was employed as a physicist with Union Carbide where he retired after 38 years of service. He was very active in both the Woods Chapel United Methodist and the First United Methodist Church of Harriman where he was the Boy Scout Leader for several years. He had attained Eagle Scout and the Order of the Arrow as a young man in West Virginia. Frank was also very supportive of the Cornstalk Heights Historic District and the Riverfront Park where he walked regularly. He also loved to go to the Harriman high School football games and enjoyed watching the Lady Vol basketball games on television. He was preceded in death by his parents, Frank N. Bensey, Sr. and Blanch Hart Bensey, two brothers, Raymond and Clyde Bensey, two sisters, Adeline Bensey and Venice Wheeler. He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 64 years, Charlotte Sniffen Bensey; three sons, Frank N. "Buddy" Bensey, III and wife, Teresa and daughters, Michelle and Stephanie Goosie of Harriman, Shawn E. Bensey and wife, Annie of Hong Kong, China, Michael W. Elizabeth Ann Bensey, 64, of Moss Point, MS passed away August 18, 2011 in Pascagoula, MS. Ms. Bensey was born on April 26, 1947 in Oak Ridge TN. She was retired from the City of Pascagoula as the grant coordinator. She helped develop and coordinate projects with all city departments, citizen groups and political leaders. These projects involved public infrastructure, housing, and recreation. She was fiercely loyal to her family and her husband, whom she was in love with every day of their life together. Her love for her dogs, cats, and horses was remarkable. She would take in an animal and give it the love and compassion that only she knew how to give. She cared about the earth and its inhabitants. She was communicative and a great mediator. Although she never had children, she had the mothering instinct and love for all children. Her main calling in life was helping others in need.

She is survived by her husband, Leslie David Jerome of Moss Point, sister, Linda Bensey of Estes Park, CO; brothers Shawn E. Bensey and his wife, Annie, and son, Michael of Hong Kong, China; Michael W. Bensey of Knoxville, TN. She is also survived by her nephew, Kiernan Bensey, niece, Ambree Rogers, her husband, Chris, great niece and nephew Landon and Adelyn Rogers, along with a host of other family, friends and loved ones.

Visitation will be Tuesday August 23, 2011 from 2:00pm to 3:00pm at Heritage Funeral Home in Escatawpa, MS. A Celebration of Life Service in her honor will begin at 3:00pm in the funeral home chapel. A reception will be held at the Senior Citizens Center in Pascagoula from 5-7:00pm.

In lieu of flowers, the family wishes donations to be made to the Jackson County Humane Society or other animal rescue organizations, in her memory. You may view and sign her online register book at www.heritagefuneralhome.us.

Frank "Buddy" Bensey III, 60, of Harriman, passed away Saturday, July 10, 2010 at his home.

He was preceded in death by her (sic.) parents, Frank and Charlotte Bensey.

Mr. Bensey is survived by his wife Teresa Bensey; step-daughters, Michelle and Stephanie Goosie of Harriman; and one granddaughter.

The family received friends Wednesday, July 14, 2010 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Davis Funeral Home, Harriman. Funeral services followed at 8 p.m. with Rev. Henry Lenoir officiating. Interment was held Friday, July 16, 2010 at 11 a.m. in the Roane Memorial Gardens in Rockwood.

Frank “Buddy” Bensey III, 60, of Harriman, passed away Saturday, July 10, 2010, at his home.

He loved being outdoors, working on his farm, woodworking and spending time with his granddaughter.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Charlotte Bensey; and an uncle, Clyde Bensey.
