PIGG, Lewis P. -- The capacity for finding enjoyment in what one has to do, of being able to invest one's labor with interest and enthusiasm, are essentials of success which have been incorporated in the career of Lewis P. Pigg, owner of a valuable stock farm of 288 acres on Section 9, Bernadotte Township. Although Mr. Pigg's possession of this property dates only from 1899, it already reflects the ideas and individuality of it's manager, as against the blind following of methods of operation practiced by his predecessor. The admirer of high-grade stock must needs feel in his element on this fine farm, for here is much to stimulate his interest and increase his information. Shropshire sheep, Percheron horses, Shorthorn cattle and Poland-China hogs attain perfection under the best possible conditions of housing and feeding, and general farming is conducted with the most modern of agricultural devises.
Mr. Pigg was born September 18, 1852, on Section 5, Bernadotte Township, a son of Anderson and Mary (Sanders) Pigg, the former born in Tennessee in 1806 and the latter in Baltimore, Md., August 6, 1805. James Pigg, the paternal grandfather, moved to Casey County, KY., and there died about 1865, having, in the meantime, entirely lost his sight. November 23, 1830, Anderson Pigg, accompanied by Messrs. Randall and Beadles, removed to Fulton County, Ill., settling in Bernadotte Township. Formerly Mr. Pigg had engaged in farming entirely, but here he engaged in various occupations while becoming accustomed to his strange and unsettled surroundings. He eventually bought the farm on Section 5, where Lewis P. was born and where his death occurred in 1893. He was a quiet, unassuming man, an old-line Jackson Democrat and attended the Methodist Episcopal Church. He was the parent of four children, of whom James S., born in July, 1843, died May 30, 1864; Lydia, widow of James Kirkpatrick, of McDonough County, Ill. and Permelia J. (deceased) was the wife of Wallace Knock of Bunch, Kans.
Lewis P. Pigg has spent his entire life on a farm. In youth he attended the public schools, but it is safe to assume that he has learned more from observation and experience than from books. He remained under the parental roof until his thirtieth year, and as an independent farmer was sufficiently successful to justify the establishment of a home of his own, which he did after his marriage, in February, 1883, to Laura Whiting. Of this union there were three children: William, born in 1885; Inez, born September 21 1887, and died the same year, and Frances, born April 17, 1889. Mrs. Pigg died at the birth of the last named child. On February 1, 1895, Mr. Pigg was united in marriage to Cora E. Freiley, born in Bernadotte Township, April 28, 1868. Of this union there are five children: Irma, born October 27, 1896; Wayne, born March 19, 1897; Freiley, born August 27, 1899; Dwight, born June 20, 1900, and Harold, born in February, 1905. Mr. Pigg is an uncompromising Democrat, but inclination never has led him into the vortex of political activity. He has led a busy, temperate life, one in which an effort always has been made to see the bright side of things, to cultivate the best thoughts and wisely utilize his opportunities.

From John P. Kirkpatrick
This man was the seventh of eleven children and he lived on the paternal farm until his father's death. He was born 27 May 1841 in Morgan County, Illinois, and died 5 October 1909, Macomb, Illinois. He is buried in Camp Creek Cemetery, McDonough County, Illinois. On reaching manhood, he bought 160 acres of the homestead and commenced general farming, stock-raising and feeding. This farm was in McDonough County, Illinois.
Mr. Kirkpatrick was married 15 September 1867 in McDonough County, Illinois, to Mary Frances Munson. She was born 26 January 1846 in Rushville, Schuyler
County, Illinois, and died 24 April 1910 in Macomb, Illinois. She is also buried in
Camp Creek Cemetery in McDonough County. Her parents were Eliphelet Philbrook
and Catherine (Sanders) Munson. Eliphelet was born 11 Jun 1817 in Colchester
Vermont. Catherine, his wife was born 22 January in 1821 in Maryland.
John Lane Kirkpatrick's mother, Catherine Matilda (Sims) Kirkpatrick, lived with him on his farm until her death on 8 January 1877. Kirkpatrick improved the farm,
enlarging it to 360 acres, including 120 acres of timber and pasture land in Bethel
and Industry Townships. On 2 Jun 1860, John Lane Kirkpatrick met with a very
serious accident. He had gone hunting with friends and they had all stopped to rest.
He momentarily leaned on the barrel of the shot gun and it accidentally discharged.
The gun blast necessitated the amputation of his left arm about four inches above his
elbow. He continued to farm after the amputation. He was a Republican in politics
and a Presbyterian in religion.
There were three children born of the marriage.
On the 1880 Census of Industry, McDonough Co., Illinois John appears with his wife, Mary, children Catherine, George and James. His nephews Pary [Perry] and
Benjamin and niece Hariet M. are also in the household.

Note From Kirkpatrick Pennington of Arkansas in his email dated 5 Jul 2003:
"George Melvin Kirkpatricks' birthplace, 1869, McDonough County, IL. (Ref. Photo of homestead)
I am unsure if it still exists in this form. George was the son of John Lane, Jr, who lost an arm in a hunting accident in 1861, just before the surrender of Fort Sumter, and as a result, never served in the Union Army, though his brother and cousins did do so."
OBITUARY
John L. Kirkpatrick, one of McDonough county's most respected citizens, died suddenly at his home in Macomb Tuesday morning at 10:40 o'clock, aged 67 years, 4 months and 8 days. Funeral services will be held at Ebenezer church today at 10 o'clock, conducted by Rev. Thompson of Macomb. Interment in the Camp Creek cemetery.
Mr. Kirkpatrick was for many years engaged in farming six miles northwest of Industry. About a year ago he sold his farm to his son, George, and moved to Macomb.
His death was sudden and unexpected, and is a severe shock to his wife, who has been delicate health for several years. He was taken sick with what was diagnosed as a case of indigestion. While quite sick he was able to be around and Monday afternoon went up town. In the evening, when he returned home, he did not feel so well and at about 7 o'clock a physician was summoned, who pronounced the ailment indigestion. Tuesday morning he was up and around the house a little, but was not feeling very well. About 10:30 he was sitting in a chair and his sister-in-law, Mrs. William Munson of Tina, Mo., who is visiting with him, gave him his medicine. His wife had a short time previous, while he was walking around the room advised him to lie down but he only laughed and said he felt all right. Mrs. Munson gave him his medicine and then steped out of the room. He was sitting in the chair and she noticed nothing pecular about him, but he said nothing to her. She started up stairs when Mrs Kirkpatrick called to her that she heard her husband make a pecular noise. She hurried to him and while he was sitting in his chair, his head had dropped and an examin- [some text missing here] physician was summoned and he arrived in a very few moments but life was extinct. It is supposed that indigestion was complicated with heart trouble, this being hereditary in the family, caused his death.
Deceased was born in Morgan county, near Concord, where he grew to manhood. He moved to this county in 1864 and on Sept. 15, 1867, was united in marriage with Miss Mary Munson, who survives him.
Most of his life was spent in farming. When a young man he met with an accident while hunting which resulted in the loss of one arm, near the elbow, but with this handicap he pushed ahead the harder and made a success of his work. He devoted his time to farming and stock raising and by careful attention to his business prospered. He was an earnest, christian man, square in his dealings with his fellow man.
He leaves besides his wife, two sons - George of Industry township and James G. of Bethel township. He leaves also one sister, Mrs. Charles Munson of Macomb.

From John P. Kirkpatrick
James Garfield Kirkpatrick was born 26 December 1879 at McComb, Illinois, and died at Nevada, Missouri, 29 November 1966. He married Bertha Sarah Rexroat, daughter of William H. and Mary Francis (Landis) Rexroat, on 24 May 1905, in Saline County, Nebraska. She was born 10 August 1886 in Nebraska. The couple were divorced at Independence, Missouri, sometime between 1935 and 1937 after a lengthy separation.
The couple had a dispute sometime around 1915 and separated at that time. James departed for Kansas City, Missouri, and Bertha continued to live on the family farm.
In Kansas City, James (most often called "J.G."), entered into business with Ed Pauley, a cousin. After World War I, James came into possession of a large apartment house in Kansas City. He and his estranged wife arranged that she should take over the apartment house and he would take the farm. As a result, Bertha Kirkpatrick moved to Kansas City with her children and her brother Everett. She there made the acquaintance of James DeLong, owner of a coal company. In time, DeLong took over the mortgage on Bertha's apartment house. He died leaving Bertha a coal company, the mortgage and a large cash bequest.
J.G., in the meantime, operated an oil company at Ottawa, Kansas. He remained there until about 1938 when he came to Nevada, Missouri and joined his son Dale Kirkpatrick in the operation of a combined oil company-auto wrecking business. In 1959 he married Mrs. Margaret Eubank. He suffered a stroke in the early 1960's and died in 1966. He is buried in Oakwood Cemetery, Macomb, Illinois. He was a Mason and a member of Knights Templars.
