OBITUARY - The Salem Leader or The Salem Democrat; after December 26, 1929
LEWIS PAYNE
Lewis Cass Payne was born Oct. 10th, 1849, his age being 80 years, 2 months and 16 days. The place of his birth was quite near the home here he afterward made his permanent residence. He was the oldest child of Wm. Harvey and Harriett Hartley Payne. While still a small child, about five years old, his father died. Not long after this the mother and a baby sister died near the same hour, and were buried at the same time.
He spent his boyhood and young manhood in the community of his birth. On Nov. 10th, 1876 he was united in marriage to Ella Brickey. To this union nine children were born: Claude L., who was residing with his parents at the time of his father’s death; Mrs. Herschel Tatlock, of Covington, Tennessee; Jas. Cassius, of East St. Louis; Wm. Herschel, who died March 26, 1908; Mrs. Virgil Mitchell, of Scottsburg, Ind.; Mrs. Fred Baynes, of Kokomo, Ind.; Mrs. Lucretia Newlon, who died August 30th, 1926, and Dollyne E., who is a teacher in the Salem schools.
Lewis Payne spent practically all his life in the neighborhood of his birth. After his marriage he and his wife decided to make their home in the Highland community. This home they fashioned, the truly fine, splendid family they reared, speak in wonderful testimony to the lives of Lewis and Ella Payne. It is a greater tribute to their lives than any monument of stone however large and fine.
Mr. Payne was a charter member of the Highland Farmers’ Club and until his recent illness remained active in the organization. He was always interested in the things that would be for the betterment of his community and was always willing to do his part in any movement that would bring greater blessings to his home and family.
His life was a busy one and in home and community there will be a vacant place. The place of a good citizen, a kind neighbor, a loving husband and father can not be filled.
About one year ago he suffered a severe attack of influenza from which he never fully recovered. Medical skill and loving care were unable to bring relief. On Dec. 21 he suffered a severe attack which resulted after a few days, in his death.
He leaves to mourn their loss, his wife, seven children, seventeen grandchildren and one sister, Mrs. Charles Boling, of Bentonville, Arkansas.
Although sorrow always comes when loved ones leave, yet we know that for them it is the beginning of a new day.
“That death seems but a covered way
Which opens into light,
Wherein no blinded child can stray
Beyond the Father’s sight.
That care and trial seem at last
Through memory’s sunset air.
Like mountain ranges over past
In purple distance fair,
And so the shadows fall apart,
And so the west winds play
And all the windows of the heart
Are open to the day.”
The funeral services were held in the home and a large number of friends and relatives were in attendance. Rev. Wm. R. Seat of the Salem Baptist Church, and Oliver Trueblood, of the Highland Friends Church, were in charge of the services. A quartette consisting of R. S. Baynes, Fred Simpson, Wm. Cauble and Thomas Lewelling sang the following songs: The Home of the Soul, We Are Going Down the Valley and Rock of Ages. After the simple but beautiful services, interment took place at Crown Hill Cemetery.

OBITUARY – The Salem Leader or Democrat; after12 July 1916:
MRS. CAROLINE PAYNE
The time will come in the life of every one of us, however dear that life may be, however strong the desire to cling to it when we must yield it up to Him who gave it, so, a long and well spent life was ended in the Highland neighborhood early Wednesday morning and a tired and weary soul passed into the Haven of Rest.
Caroline, daughter of Elias and Sarah Davis, was born at Salem, Indiana, February 12, 1833, and died on the early morning of July 12, 1916, age 83 years and six months.
In the year of 1848 she was married to Henry Rice Payne and to this union were born eleven children, seven of whom are still living, viz: Wm. E., Jordon M., Francis L., Henry B., Edgar D., Mrs. Sylvester Graham and Mrs. A. C. White, Mrs. A. J. Peugh having preceded her to the great beyond the 4th of May, 1916. She also leaves four brothers and one sister, namely, John Davis, of Texas; Benton, Enoch and Walter, of Salem; and Mrs. Jane Sowles, of New Albany, Indiana.
At an early age, she united with the Methodist church and until her death she lived a true, simple Christian life, always attending church until her health was impaired, about two years ago. For the last few months and weeks she was afflicted with a complication of diseases, and death came as a welcome to her suffering and pain, Wednesday morning at 6:15.
Besides the immediate family, a large concourse of relatives and friends are left to mourn their loss and to vouch for a life well spent in work for her neighbors, friends and her Savior.
The funeral services were conducted at the Highland M. E. Church by her pastor, Rev. N. M. Rumbley, assisted by Rev. Trowbridge, of Odon, Indiana, Friday morning, July 14th, at 10 a.m. The remains were laid to rest by those of her companion, who departed this life April 30, 1904, in the beautiful city of the dead, Crown Hill cemetery.
“Gone but not forgotten.”.

After a few days of complete disability he quietly went away to his reward on the early morning of January 3rd, 1925, having reached the age of 74 years, 3 months and 25 days.
Will, as he was commonly known, grew to manhood in the Highland neighborhood and all knew him to be a jovial, friendly and good natured neighbor.
