Parents
Biography
Freida Elizabeth Smith was born on 13 June 1920 in Bowling Green, Wood Co., OH. She married
Simon Gerald Johnson, son of
Samuel Berkey Johnson and
Laura R. Robertson, on 25 May 1942 in Findlay, Hancock Co., OH. Freida Elizabeth Smith died on 3 February 2004 in Bowling Green, Wood Co., OH, dates per SSDI, last residence Portage.
Note:
Freida Carnicom was a friend of Freida's mother, Addie (Drummond) Smith and was Freida's namesake.
According to Freida's personal account of her life, she was eight years old when her mother died. At the time the family lived in Rudolph, Ohio and Freida was in the third grade. They moved to Bradner, Ohio where she and sister Mildred attended school. Freida was then in the fifth grade. Her father George Smith had written two checks totalling $68.00. This was at the time of the Depression and before he could make the checks good, the Rudolph Bank closed its doors. George spent ten months in jail in Columbus, Ohio. The banker committed suicide. Both Freida and Mildred went to live with their uncle Ed Smith. They only lived with him for two to three weeks when he took them to the Wood County Children's Home on West Wooster Street. This was in 1930 - 1931. When George got out of jail, he lived with and worked for his sister Pearl (Smith) Knaggs. A county commissioner who lived in a big brick house in Eagleville told George he should get the girls back. Aunt Pearl told George she no longer had any work for him. He got the girls and moved into a house on the corner of Ducat and State Route 281.
