Note: It is not entirely clear from the censuses which Ambler-surnamed children shown in 1870 and 1880 were biological children of William. Online genealogies of high quality agree that Barbara was the daughter of Mary McElheney and her first husband, Robert Dias. That would mean Simon C. Ambler had to be a son of William and Angeline Ambler, since Simon and Barbara were close to the same age. Mahala Ambler could have been born a Dias, but my best guess is that she was also a child of Angeline, and that Angeline died soon after her birth, and that William remarried between 1865 and 1870. DLB 2014.
