Harold L. Shankle, 72, passed away May 1, 1988 at the Lutheran Home of the Good Shepherd, Havre, Montana, where he had made his home since January 20, 1988.
Harold was born September 23, 1915 in Chinook. Dr. Hoon was the attending physician. He had been a difficult birth and Harold's mother, Cora Alice, died a couple months later.
Harold was raised by his grandparents, Isaac and Luella Shankle, and had many good memories of living with his Aunt Minnie and Uncle Mike Terbovitz in the Lohman area; attending high school with his cousins, Earl and Harold Terbovitz.
During the summer months Harold worked for his Uncle Mike on the Great Northern Railroad as a laborer.
He returned to Wichita, Kansas and there he married Pearl Bird in 1938. To this marriage were born two children, Harold Dexter and Vernelia Cora.
Harold went to work for the Great Northern Railroad in 1939 making their home in the Lohman area.
The railroad was Harold's life. He followed in his uncle's footsteps as a section foreman, loving the outdoors and the railroad tracks.
Harold and Pearl divorced and he remarried in 1949 to Melvina Stevens and to this marriage were born a daughter, Ronnda Lynn. Harold moved his family to Buffalo, Montana, leaving the main line and working the Lewistown tracks. Harold and Melvina divorced and he married Helen Sluggett in 1958, returning to the main line, maintaining the tracks between the east side of Fort Benton to Box Elder.
Helen and Harold had two children Maureen Kay and a son, Rick Howard. They returned to the Lewistown area, once again, this time making their home in Lewistown. Harold and Helen divorced and he returned to the main line working the track again between Box Elder and Fort Benton.
Harold married Pauline Miles March 10, 1972 at Fort Benton and they made their home in Big Sandy. Harold retired from the Burlington Northern Railroad in September 1975 after 40 years of service at the age of 60.
Harold and Pauline moved to Conrad in July 1979 and then to Great Falls in February 1985, where his wife, Pauline, still resides.
Harold is preceded in death by his father, Abraham H. and son, Harold Dexter and a grandson John Joseph Tilleman.
Harold is survived by his family mentioned and one half-brother, Rollin Shankle of San Diego, California; two half-sisters, Fina Gwin of Tulsa, Oklahoma and Alice Marie Tucker of Tampa, Florida; and 12 grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
Services were held at the Edwards Funeral Chapel, May 6, 1988, with Pastor Betty Mawbey officiating.
Burial was at the Kuper Memorial Cemetery.
