Obituary (findagrave.com):
Barbara Murdoch Phillips passed away peacefully on November 20, 2010 in Fullerton at the age of 94. Born in Boston on November 16, 1916, she was the only child of Joseph and Maude Murdoch. The family moved to California in 1929. She attended Radcliffe College (BA, Phi Beta Kappa, 1938) and UC Berkeley (MA 1939). At Berkeley she met Horace Phillips, a fellow resident of International House. They married in 1942 and spent the war years in Chicago and Florida. The couple moved to Whittier in 1946 to raise their family. There they remained until 2003, when they moved to Morningside in Fullerton.
Barbara always found herself engaged in various volunteer activities, including the Girl Scouts, the Friendly Hills Women's Club, the Harvard and Radcliffe Club, Friends of the (Whittier) Library, and the St. Matthias Altar Guild. Common to all of these activities were her organizational skills, the lifelong love of language, books, and learning, and her commitment to providing educational opportunities for all. She was also an avid gardener and a skilled practitioner of many arts and crafts. She was always much loved by all who came to know her.
Barbara is survived by her husband of 68 years, Horace, three children; John Phillips of Berkeley, California, Elizabeth Phillips of Princeton, New Jersey, and Susan Phillips of Voorheesville, New York, and one grandchild; Katherine Levinton of Princeton.
We celebrate the life of Barbara Murdoch Phillips at the Morningside complex in Fullerton, CA, on Sunday, December 5, 2010 at 2 PM, and with a funeral service at St. Matthias Episcopal Church in Whittier, CA, on Monday, December 6, 2010, 11 AM.
