He worked as a glassworker and a dairy farmer. In 1973, he founded the Council for the Disabled in Lancaster and served as a trustee. In 1980, he was appointed to President Carter's International Handicap Committee, receiving a White House award for his contributions. In 1992, he was presented with an award for Outstanding Lifetime Achievement by Unicare, a subsidiary of United Health Inc.
He was buried in May 1993 in Maple Grove Cemetery, Lancaster, Fairfield Co., OH, Findagrave #35829998.
