Dr. William Gaston Gamble was born on 9 March 1834 in Prairie Bluff, Wilcox Co., AL. He married Elizabeth Ivanona Agnew on 17 September 1872. He died on 11 July 1920 in Greenville, Washington Co., MS,

William Gaston Gamble, a son of Samuel and Mary [née Gaston] Gamble, was born in the bounds of Prairie Bluff in Wilcox County, Alabama on March 9th 1834. He was educated at local schools and raised in the Presbyterian faith. At the age of 21, William graduated from the University of Alabama and then entered the School of Medicine at Tulane University from which he graduated in 1859. On May 15th 1862, William G. Gamble enlisted in Company C, 42nd Alabama Infantry Regiment in Mobile, Alabama under Capt. Thomas and served as an assistant surgeon during the war.

After the war, Dr. Gamble returned to Alabama and continued in his medical practice around Wilcox County; until he moved to the area around Brice's Corners in Lee County, Mississippi. Here William met and met and married Miss Elizabeth Ivanova "Iva" Agnew, a daughter of James Wilson Agnew and the former Miss Elizabeth Dorilla Richey in 1872. This union was blessed with known children:

For the next fifty years, Dr. William Gaston Gamble engaged in an active practice and became well-known & respected by all of his neighbors within the community. Upon his retirement, he moved to Guntown, Mississippi, where he enjoyed his life as a Ruling Elder of the Presbyterian Church.

On July 11, 1920, Dr. William Gaston Gamble departed his earthly life at the age of 86 years. He was visiting his two sons in Greenville, Mississippi at the time. His remains were returned to his old hometown and laid to rest beside his beloved wife, Iva and his two children, Gertrude and James, who had preceded him.

David Charles Black

Funeral services for David Charles Black, 95, of Clinton were held at 10:00 a.m. December 12 (s/b 17) at Southern Funeral Home Chapel in Durant. Rev. Jack Nazary of West officiated. Interment was in the West Cemetery.

Mr. Black, formerly of West, died December 10 at Heritage Manor Nursing Home in Clinton. A native of Yalobusha County, he Lived most of his life in West where he had been a grocery store owner and a member of West Jackson Baptist Church.

He is survived by three sons, Charles Black, Bill Black and Buddy Black, all of Jackson; four daughters, Dorothy Graves of Brandon, Lottie Mae Nix of Gonzales, LA., Elizabeth Hodges of Durant and Pauline Gamble of Greenville; and 22 grandchildren; and a host of great grandchildren.

Pallbearers were David Black, David Watson, III, Ed Graves, Walter Winstead, Plez White, James Welsey Hodges, William Gamble and Bill Musselwhite.

John W. Dart, 89, Annapolis, Illinois passed away at 7:10 a.m. Wednesday September 19, 2007, at his residence. Born on April 29, 1918, in Licking Twp., Crawford County he was the son of O. M. Dart and Gladys (Battershell) Dart. John served in the U. S. Army during W. W. II with the 741st Tank Battalion during D-Day and the Battle of the Bulge. He was a farmer all his life North of Oblong. John was a member of the Oblong American Legion Post #219. He enjoyed telling stories; reading and was always going someplace.

On November 5, 1945, he married Helen B. Hart, who preceded him in death on June 26, 1999. Also preceding him in death were his parents and one brother, Gerald "Doc" Dart.

Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Kaye & Jim Gibler; two grandchildren, Randy Gibler and Lynn Carbonneau; three great-grandsons, Michael & Stacie Gibler, Todd Gibler and Chris Carbonneau; two brothers and sister-in-law, Stanley Dart and Kenneth and Norma Dart; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Shirley & Warren Stout and Jean & Charlie "Herb" Bubb; and several nieces and nephews.

Burial is in Wilkin Cemetery, rural Oblong, Illinois.
