Biography

Sophia Bline was born on 30 December 1835 in Newton Twp., Licking Co., OH.1,2 She married James Hezekiah Colville, son of Vastine Colville and Mary P. Colville, about 1855, Nine children born, eight living as of the 1900 census -- the correct numbers would appear to be ten born, eight living -- of the ten chldren, Rachel is not found after 1880, and Flora had passed in 1894. A girl, Annie, age 11, is listed in the family in the 1870 census, and appears on that census to have been a daughter who was listed out of the correct birth order, but I don't think so. At age 11, she should have been listed in the family in 1860, but she was not. Her birth date appears to have been too close to Flora Colville's birth date to have been other than a twin, but Flora Colville had no twin. With no other indication that an Ann Colville of that age existed in that time and place, I conclude she was living with the family in 1870, but not a member of it. DLB 2019.2 Sophia Bline died on 2 April 1901 in Alexandria, Licking Co., OH. She was buried in April 1901 in Wilson Cemetery, Newark, Licking Co., OH, Findagrave #50719162.

Name spelled various ways in VA. He moved to Newark, Ohio with his wife and two oldest children between 1840 and 1843 along with several members of his wife's family, including Isaac Bline. Before 1857, he followed his brother-in-law, Isaac Bline, to the northwestern part of Crawford Co, IL, near what is now Bellair leaving his family in OH. He built a cabin, sent for his family, and when they arrived, they found that he was dead. Locals said that he was mistakenly shot as an Indian. Family members think that he was shot and robbed for the other money he was carrying to purchase more land. In one place Edwin Howe's material says "Val was Accidentley shot and killed by a friend or acquaintance (name unknown) while hunting" and in another It says "Elizabeth (Rhodes), whose husband Val Rhoads was murdered on the Willard Lingafelter place in 1857." No record of inquest or other actions related to the shooting have been found in the Crawford Co, IL records.1

He was buried in 1857 in Bellair Cemetery, Annapolis, Crawford Co., IL, Findagrave #27093183.
