MAN FISHING OFF ELK RUN BRIDGE KILLED BY TRAIN
John Eckstein, 29, Leaves Widow, Baby Daughter; Rites Wednesday
John Eckstein, 29, of 129 Polk street, was instantly killed at 4:25 a.m. Sunday when struck by a northbound Waterloo, Cedar Falls & Northern freight train while he was fishing from Elk Run bridge, two miles southeast of Waterloo.
Sheriff H. T. Wagner said Eckstein apparently had fallen asleep, was awakened by the approaching train and, as he rose up, was hit. A basal skull francture was the cause of death, Coroner Sidney D. Smith said. There will be no inquest.
An employe of the canning department at the Rath Packing company, he had left his home at 3:30 a.m. accompanied by Marvin Rousselow, 119 Cottage Grove, a fellow employe at Rath's. Rousselow said Monday he was on the opposite side of the bridge from Eckstein and because of the darkness was not aware his companion had been killed until he went to join him at the car and discovered his body on some cement steps near the accident scene. He summoned resdents of the vicinity and Sheriff Wagner.
Train Motorman Unaware.
Also unaware of the accident until railroad officials notified him, Charles F. Cunda, 219 Oliver street, motorman on the electric freight train, said he saw several fishermen sitting on the edge of the bridge on the downstream side, as he approached the trestle.
Charles R. Owen, 1148 Columbia street, was the conductor on the train, which was coming into the Waterloo terminal from a Cedar Rapids run.
Inspection of the train failed to show any protruding equipment which might have been responsible for Eckstein's death, Elmer Bitterly, superintendent of the W., C. F. & N. railway, said.
Eckstein's wife, who was visiting at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Brown in Independence, Ia., was notified of the tragedy and returned home Sunday morning.
Resident Here Four Years.
A resident of Waterloo for the past four years, Eckstein was born Oct. 27, 1913, in Boone, Ia., the son of Chris and Mary Eckstein. He married Irene McCollom of Grand Junction, Ia., on Oct. 3, 1940, in Waterloo.
Survivors besides the widow are a 10-month-old daughter, Christy Ann; his parents at Boone; two siisters, Mrs. Arthur Hillman of Grand Junction and Mrs. Truman Tuttle of Boone, and two brothers, Edward Eckstein of Oklahoma City, Okla., and Harry Eckstein of Boone.
The body was taken to the O'Keefe & Towne funeral home, where prayer services will be conducted at 4 p.m. Wednesday by Rev. Fr. N. J. Lentz, pastor of St. John's Catholic church. The body will be taken to Boone, Ia., where further rites will be conducted Thursday at the Schroeder funeral home. Burial will be in Boone.
